Can't Access HostMonster - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

Got through to customer service. Apparently something is down in our area (not a technologically inclined person so didn't catch the name of what was down) but some of us are affected by it and they're working on it. The router issue was yesterday, now it seems the Data Center IP Table got corrupted and servers were assigned different IPs.

I assume we are waiting for our servers to get their correct IPs. So some websites will work and others that are not on the same IP assignment are not yet restored... what a mess!

I just talked with support and the tech confirmed that none of the admins have any idea of why this issue is happening. He said it's the same issue that happened in August and again in January, which now makes 3 major outages in less than a year. He said it was odd that the company hasn't looked into redundancy for this continued failure, and that it's perplexing to him. He suggested it could be many more hours, if not all the way into tomorrow.

Webmail still down. Hostmonster - you have become completely unreliable and are causing your customers to lose hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars! What happened? You used to be great, but the last year or so, your service has been horrible with long periods of downtime and no response from you.

Matt Heywood · 16 April 2014 - 13:44
United States · OARnet

Going on 3 hours of complete downtime. No website, no cpanel, no WHM. This will take upwards of 8 hours. Seems similar to the major outages in 8/13 and 12/13. Three major network issues in under a year is about as pathetic as it gets.

Wendy Gull · 16 April 2014 - 11:21

I got through to support and it's a known network issue affecting some sites. They said admins are on it, but gave the typical no ETA reply when asked about a resolution. As Hosmonster is a hosting company that is a subsidiary of Blue Host which Blue Host is the parent of many of the most used hosting companies. This company being the size it is, runs server farms. You would think one of their main priorities would be up time and redundancy would be a necessity and or a given in our digital age. When I went to school for IT (Networks, etc.), we were beaten with the term redundancy. In a network environment redundancy is a must..... I guess I relied on a company that should supply that form of service and at least have the same type of network morals and mentality to keep systems up no matter what(unless of course some major wide outage, which is less likely to happen if redundancy is in place). Some points to mention-when doing up dates do them on an update server first(so it doesn't crash everyone), have more than one source of connection to the world(more than one backbone/provider), have the means to keep sites up or at least be able to re-route sites that might be down through some sort of back up system(another farm at another location).

For a company to be this big and not already doing the little common sense things to keep things running, my question is, where is all the money they are making going? Don't they re-invest into making their service better, not worse.

It's not like they are the new kid on the block and can't afford to make it the way it really should be.

Just realized Hostmonster (Blue Host, etc.) is like the government.... most of us don't like what's happening but we all still go with the flow and let it keep happening ;)

Angela Walker · 31 December 2013 - 13:00
United States · Time Warner Cable

Hostmonster used to be great - but lately, I cannot even send emails to people without them being kicked back because of blacklisting issues - Hostmonster's suggestion: try using google as your outgoing server to send emails. Loved that one! Now, no service at all - what a way to wrap up 2013. Way to go hostmonster - we are up in February - guess I need to start researching a new host. Something else to add to my year end crappola - thanks Hostmonster

Gilbert Gomes · 31 December 2013 - 12:31

Someone mentioned that they don't have redundancy. That's ludicrous. I wasn't talking about redundancy for our websites. I was talking about redundancy for access to their systems. Alternate routes. Data centers backing each other up in case one went down. A supposed hardware problem taking down ALL of their websites for this length of time makes them a very bad choice for anyone who makes a living off their website...

For everyone's info, I just tried a traceroute to hostmonster, and it gets to BETTERSERVE.car1.SaltLakeCity1.Level3.net (4.59.78.210), then goes behind their firewalls for either the next 10 hops, or until it gives up. Since more than one person mentioned that they were told network problems, I wonder if the problem is with Level3 and their cables.

For those of you complaining about lack of redundancy, that is something you need to provide for yourself. Hosting companies do not do it. I've used a company called 'DNS Made Easy' and their FailOver works great. You do need to have another hosting account somewhere else and upload all your files in both places, but if your business depends on your website, it's worth the hassle.

Jeff Rowe · 31 December 2013 - 11:56

I have been using hostmonster for several years with no problems. I recommend them to everyone I talk to. The company I work for uses them and neither of us has seen the problems that everyone is talking about. Today is the first major issue I have had with them, and today is the first time I haven't been able to call them. One of the main reasons I swear by them is the customer service is second to none. What's funny is if you check any of the hosting sites people have mentioned here you get the same kind of rating and feedback, nobody ever comes here when their site is working fine.

Chris GraphicDesign · 31 December 2013 - 11:54
Canada · Cogeco Cable

Come on Hostmonster... I have recommended you and praised the service but lately in the past year service has been going down hill fast. Simple scripts moving to it's own service/barely any support, all the down time and reps no longer wanting to help with problems(saying we don't do that) or now saying that is a more expensive service(WTF HM is nickel and diming us like crazy now). There was a time when there was barely any issues and when ever I called, anyone I spoke to tried to help resolve any issue and if they couldn't they would get someone that could. Why do I feel Hostmonster is working in reverse? Going from good service and great customer support to bad service and terrible customer support and when there is a problem it seems that it is easier now for you to turn off your phones and let us squirm and wait to see if our sites and accounts come back up.

It is becoming harder and harder for me to defend Hostmonster and the hiccups that have been plaguing your service for at least the past year.

It's getting closer and closer to giving money to a better more reliable source.... I understand there are issues but like I stated Hostmonster I feel the service is going backwards and getting worse.

So much for the bump in the road like I stated in previous comment defending HM.

I'm so sick of this. Hope this is resolved before tomorrow as it should be a busy shopping day. Can't afford to lose any more sales over this! Can't believe their site is down and can't get through by phone -- that's a first for me with them! Until I saw these posts on this site about them posting updates on Twitter, I thought maybe they went out of business! Ugh!

Still down for the count after 3 hours? How is that possible? Not just a little impaired, complete blackout.

Hostmonster is completely down and its killing our business. I am disappointed they don't have some sort of backup! Oh well, lost revenues I guess.

I have been with hostmonster quite a few years and have highly recommended them. I have five accounts with them. But now all my websites are very slow and not reliable. Moved one of my accounts to site5 a couple of weeks ago and good so far. Moving the files wass agravating but I cut the load times of my wordpress sites from 25+ seconds to under 5 seconds. They are not that much more expensive than hostmonster and the quality of hosting is at least as good as hostmonster used to be.

Down in Mexico too, any recomendations?, I´m seriously thinking on moving all my sites This is totally unacceptable I have clients me calling and no real answer or fixing time to tell them

Bluehost, hostmonster, hostgator... they are all owned by the same company, who probably more hosting service than these 3. All are down! Unacceptable for an internet hosting company to have issues like this. No back-up? Where is our refund for lost "hosting" and lost sales during this busy time of the year : (

When I compare them with dreamhost or hostgator, who have disableld my websites so many times for cpu abuse, they are better frankly. They cpu throttle me but dont disable my account.

They are down now. BAD! But I also can't access dreamhost or hostgator.

This company turned into a joke! I am switching Jan 2 - its over for these guys! We have lost so much sales over their pure incompetence to stand by their issued SLA - its time we take them to court and cut our losses!

They finally just tweeted "FYI we're experiencing a temporary network issue with our data center that's affecting some customers. If that's you stay tuned for updates!"

Gilbert Gomes · 31 December 2013 - 10:55

They twittered that they're down? Did they state what the problem is? We already KNEW they were down!!!

Me too, all my sites are down and I did get a response from them via Twitter that they're down. I dread having to move all my files, but this is ridiculous. I've been recommending them for years because of the great service, but they are embarrassing me now.

Gilbert Gomes · 31 December 2013 - 10:52

I've been recommending these guys for years. A company this size and they have no redundancy? This is wicked aggravating..

I agree HostMonster has been a great service for years and I have always recommended people to them, however the past 5 months has been a nightmare.

Jessica Bongiorno · 31 December 2013 - 10:40

this is seriously getting ridiculous. i've been using hostmonster since 2007 and I've told everyone about them cause they were great. my site has been down more times in the last few months than it has in the last 3 years. what the hell is going on NOW?? i'm losing sales this is stupid. time to finally switch hosting.

Tamara Fudge · 31 December 2013 - 10:39

Hostmonster is a good service and I am very pleased; okay, they are "down" right now, but this is the first time in eons that I have not been able to get in when I wanted to.

Ricardo de Aguiar · 31 December 2013 - 10:38

This is getting quite ridiculous. As big as they are they don't have a backup anywhere ? I think I may have had enough.

James Alan Smith · 31 December 2013 - 10:37

just got over a huge issue with their "fake" static IP's my site was still being shared with others on the same ip even though I was paying for a "dedicated IP. Their only answer was to give me a refund instead of giving me a real static IP. Spent 90 minutes on the phone with them just to get no help. Now less then 2 weeks later they are down for over 2 1/2 hours. Heck not even their main site is up. What kind of host can't even keep their own site up? Time to start look for new hosting...

Adam Korte · 31 December 2013 - 10:20

Here we go again!!! I used to swear by Hostmonster. This is getting rediculous!! Down at least 5 times in the last 6 months.

Not VPS their dedicated servers are down as well... All of my shared accounts are fine but dedicated server has been down for hours and no one will give me an ETA on anything or tell me what the problem is.

Roberto E. Ruiz · 20 November 2013 - 12:02

they are down again, but only for customers that bought a VPS. the most unreliable hosting company on the market. use anyone but them. you might even be safer hosting your own website out of your garage, they are that bad.

Scott McMahon · 20 November 2013 - 09:44

All my sites are down on HostMonster. Tried calling their phone line. That system puts you into an endless loop. Tried contacting them through the Chat feature, same problem, no response. Although the HostMonster home page is up an running, all the backend support and my own VPS server is down.
