Can't Access The New York Times - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as newyorktimes.com, nyt.com

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

NY Times still inaccessible beyond the home page. Problems identical to those reported by Judith Klinger 14 hours ago. Phoned Customer Care last night (from Hong Kong), and was told they hadn't "updated" for Firefox yet, but a fix was "imminent". That was almost 12 hours ago, and still inacessible on both Firefox and Safari. This is only the latest episode in the walking disaster of the NYT online since their "upgrade" some months ago. Many features, such as photo sequences, won't open at all. Sometimes reader comments will open, sometimes not, and then only after toggling back and forth between the home page and the article. I have no troubles at all on any other newspaper site, including the Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Huffington, the Guardian, the NYer, etc. Just outrageously irresponsible incompetence in the NYT digital division, and in the management staff who permit this chaos to continue.

Times Web Site Affected by External Hacking Attack

By CHRISTINE HAUGHNEY
Published: August 27, 2013

The New York Times Web site was unavailable to readers on Tuesday afternoon following an attack on the company’s domain name registrar, Melbourne IT. The attack also required employees of The Times to stop sending out sensitive e-mails.

NYT is still down - are reports of requests for nyt sites are being directed to russia. Sounds like the russians are unhappy with the nyt coverage of assad/syria. Must be the case because only a state sponsored effort could bring down the nyt. Kind of scary - if the russians can keep the nyt off the web - wonder what they could do to our infrastructure that depends upon the web.

Be interesting to see how this attack shakes out - bet Janet Napolitano will come out with an interesting statement like she did for the underwear bomber.

After some research found out that it's a DNS problem (what translates "www.nytimes.com" to the actual fisical address). If you go to the IP address (http://170.149.168.130) it comes up. If you know/feel confident changing your system settings, you can get around this problem.
