Can't Access Family Search - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

FamilyTree has been almost prohibitively slow all day (It's now 3:40 Mountain Time, Monday 2015-11-16). My Internet speed is fine ( Chrome browser, Windows 10. Rebooted computer, router, twice. Used Chrome advanced settings to clear all 50+ FamilySearch cookies: no improvement. I wish FamilySearch would post a banner advising patrons when there is this kind of outage.

FamilySearch may be up and reachable, but the Family Tree is consistantly down. I keep getting error messages. Anyway, looks to me like they need to add more servers or upgrade the ones they have. Weekends are worst.

Seems as if their progressive upgrades have been overloading the site on a regular basis ... It wasn't broken before - why did they have to start messing with it? "Ugh!"

Betty Lewis · 17 May 2013 - 05:05

5/16/2013, having problems also with Family Search, keeps displaying technical problems and pages with scrambled letters, now the search button displays loading and seems frozen, nothing happens when I click on, 5/17/2013 still not working this morning.

Richard Knaak · 16 May 2013 - 22:15

Page comes up fine, but can't search. Always says 'loading'. Isitdown should check THAT out

Deloris Williams · 16 May 2013 - 21:57

I'm having the same problem as most of the others when using Chrome. It just started today because it was working fine yesterday. I can't get to the records to do a search, none of the buttons are working. I usually can go directly to a Records Collection, but all I'm getting is a blank screen. Tried it in FF, but that works up to a point, I can't view images at all. Anybody know what is going on?

Patrick M. Hickey · 16 May 2013 - 21:20

Similar problems to those already described.

Charleen Nelson · 16 May 2013 - 21:10

Robin Pettri · 16 May 2013 - 17:39

the site comes up but I can't go to "records".

Michael Lee Stills · 16 May 2013 - 17:37

WD Smith · 16 May 2013 - 17:18

The site comes up but none of the links are working at all.

Nancy Marty · 16 May 2013 - 16:57

Same problem as previous two. Enter film numbers, or names, or places and nothing happens.

Daiyu Hurst · 16 May 2013 - 16:56

I am having the same problem, SEARCH button is grayed out and says LOADING, but this is only happening with the SW IRON (Cromium) Browser, and seems to have begun after I updated Java today. The search button is appearing properly in Internet Exploder, so this looks like a Microsoft/LDS conspiracy to me.

Peggy Troe · 16 May 2013 - 16:46

I can access the website... I just can't search for anything. The "search" button is stuck at "loading" but it never does.

Cindi Scott · 16 May 2013 - 16:36

it is not loading no matter what

Marie Brannon · 18 April 2013 - 12:09

I can enter a name, but the site won't allow a search - the "Loading" box remains at 'Loading' forever. Refreshed, restarted, etc. Very frustrating.

Vanessa Strachan · 18 April 2013 - 11:12

2 days ago fine, now, nothing for 2 days...

Justin Martin · 26 March 2013 - 14:16

Gillian Rogers · 11 March 2013 - 16:52

i am so glad to know that i am not the only one because i was afraid my computer was broken. it hasnt been working for me for a LONG time, like two months now! it allows me to search and it shows results, but when i click on an item from a search it codes the webpage in lots of letters!

Patricia Thomis · 9 March 2013 - 15:22

I haven't been able to find hardly any info I want since the changing to the new format which in my estimation should never have been altered in the first place. the previous format was brilliant all you have done is make life harder, I keep putting the year of a birth ie 1840- 1850 and it keeps telling me to put in a 4 digit date, if something is working well why change the thing,

Betty Hunter · 13 February 2013 - 06:53

I haven't been able to get information off of Family Search in a long time.

Pat Galovich · 5 February 2013 - 11:09
