We have tried pinging Microsoft Windows Update website using our server and the website returned the above results. If update.microsoft.com is down for us too there is nothing you can do except waiting. Probably the server is overloaded, down or unreachable because of a network problem, outage or a website maintenance is in progress...

Can't Access Microsoft Windows Update - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

Microsoft Update Servers: Broken

Server might be "up" but the service is down. No Windows updates working on my MDT deployments, nor on standalone systems since Sunday, May 1st. 2016 through at least today, May 2nd.

So the question: why May 1st?

Hello Everyone,

Wanted to let everyone know my recent experience this week with Microsoft Windows Updates. I just installed Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 MSDN (fresh download... direct ISO from MVLSC --> (https://www.microsoft.com/Licensing/servicecenter/default.aspx). Tried on one physical system (a Dell Optiplex 990) and two VMs. Its been 5 days trying to "check for updates" in fact its still checking for updates. I tried all the basics, restarts, MS FixIT tools, etc (no joy). just checking, checking, and still checking...). Each system is stuck on "checking for updates" and the bar just keeps going and going... No additional modifications to the OS were done, just a clean install and immediate check for updates. Does anyone at Micro$oft know that something is wrong? Hope they get this fixed soon. I'm going to have to call their support Monday morning (what pure joy to kick off the week, I can't wait). Anyone else having the same issue? I'm in Atlanta, Georgia. The problem was noticed this week Monday April 11th 2016.

Why am I NOT surprised? When I asked a PC guru friend of mine if they are forcing Win 10 on everyone ... he laughed, but it wasn't at me, it was because he believes that's the case as well. They push out a 3 to 6 gig upgrade- EVEN if you have no interest!!! They say: "In case the user want's to upgrade later" Meanwhile, they have added "updates" that track you at an even higher rate- (because you know damn well we are all being tracked by the various big boys-Google-MSN- etc. etc.)- so that they can push win 10 and later on, they are talking about a subscription for using it!!! THAT is why its supposedly FREE at this time!!! ... If they EVER try to impose a subscription based user fee- I'm done. I'll simply learn to use the free OS's that have been around forever now. What GD bunch of thieving con artists. No wonder the world laughs at the USA now ... pathetic.

It seems the server is slow or they have tampered with the windows 7 update, because it's taking me forever on a new install to get updates only some downloading if its done one by one.

I"m having that problem right now as we speak. I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional, and the only update that does install is the Windows Update Agent. If I check it just sits there and sits there.

We have been experiencing problems with multiple PCs failing to check for updates, since Windows 10 was released actually. If we keep retrying it eventually works. I wonder if their servers are overloaded by Windows 10 downloads?

I was updated to windows 10 on my newly bought laptop which is a HP and came across a problem for reasons unknown whilst troubleshooting the issue notified it whilst troubleshooting windows update it said service registration is missing or corrupt I had no idea why to do so I did a complete reinstall of windows 8.1 to how it was before I ever turned that laptop on and windows updates still won't install for me
