Can't Access NationStates - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

@Everyone: Currently it seems that Nationstates has recovered from the DoS Attack, but this is on my end at the moment, so if any of you are still unable to gain access to Nationstates, i would suggest waiting slightly longer to get on.

Caitlyn StarNight · 5 July 2014 - 22:22
United States · Comcast Cable · Firefox 30.0 on Windows

I'd like to mention that at least for me, I can still visit the forums fine, I just can't log in.

http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=37474

There is a link to some of the controversy and while i don't understand any of it (I'm a pure RPer, I have no special region I belong to) I can see that it is a pretty nasty thing

Jaylin Ryan Rose · 5 July 2014 - 22:15
United States · Comcast Cable · Chrome 33.0 on Windows

@Clinton MacKay: I believe it was because the Moderator who proposed the Liberation was a member of the Raider Community and may or may not have been using the proposal to help the Raider's take over another Region, so that is probably the straightforward idea of the controversy, there may be other elements involved with this Proposal.

@Brad Johnson: No, it was not "Liberate Hell" That proposal was most likely passed without incident, it was the "Liberate Haven", which will probably never be brought up onto the World Assembly Voting Table lest i automatically resign from the WA entirely.

Brad Johnson · 5 July 2014 - 22:13
United States · Cable One · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

I thought it was "Liberate Hell, " No?

Jaylin Ryan Rose · 5 July 2014 - 22:13
United States · Comcast Cable · Chrome 33.0 on Windows

@Michael Kirscher: While i THINK it is the "Liberate Haven" Proposal, i am not 100% Sure, it could be just a random DoS attack or it could have been planned during/before the "Liberate Haven" Proposal was even set up, but either way, if it was about the "Liberate Haven" Proposal, then it might send a message to the Moderators of Nationstates that the Community honestly hates Riva's Proposal.

Clinton MacKay · 5 July 2014 - 22:10
United States · Time Warner Cable · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

Why was Liberate Haven so controversial?

Michael Kirscher · 5 July 2014 - 22:09
United States · BellSouth.net · Silk 3.21 on Kindle Fire

So this is because of a stupid arguments over an rped topic in the WA? Seriously? This is why I don't even vote on WA decisions. I just want to build up my nation. FYI whenever they get us back up, my nation is called the federation of Greater Eire.

Jaylin Ryan Rose · 5 July 2014 - 21:54
United States · Comcast Cable · Chrome 33.0 on Windows

@Jonas Soden: The East Coast was the first cases of this outage, this was a result of a DoS Attack on nationstates (More Presumably the Highly Controversial Liberate Haven, that the Moderators horribly handled)

Jonas Soden · 5 July 2014 - 21:51
United States · Charter Communications · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

Jennifer Government: NationStates Down from Western NC! :(

Jorden Booth · 5 July 2014 - 21:34
United States · Time Warner Cable · Silk 1.0.143.1 on Kindle Fire

Could someone possibly bring me up to speed on "Liberate Haven"? I obviously didn't see that resolution and why it caused outrage.

Jaylin Ryan Rose · 5 July 2014 - 21:20
United States · Comcast Cable · Chrome 33.0 on Windows

@Pyotr Sozonov: Yes, i agree on this part, Mallorea and Riva really sparked outrage with that proposal, and it probably started a chain of evens that would lead to a DoS attack.

Jorden Booth · 5 July 2014 - 21:18
United States · Time Warner Cable · Silk 1.0.143.1 on Kindle Fire

This is shitty. I thought it was just a problem with my net service. Hopefully NS will be back up soon.

Pyotr Sozonov · 5 July 2014 - 21:00

Something tells me this might have to do with Liberate Haven

I've been able to reach the server, and [violet] has posted stating that this is the result of a DDoS (Denial of Service) Attack, and may be up to 24 hrs before we can reach it again.

Jaylin Ryan Rose · 5 July 2014 - 18:34

If it is because of the "Liberate Haven" even being utilized by one of the Moderators (I forgot his name), then i might start laughing.

I can't believe its been down this long. This is highly unusual, something must be wrong with the servers and they had to take them down for maintenence.

After this long a break, someone will post a news thing up to explain what went wrong.

Pretty annoying how NS times out when I try to go on, and I can only go on via proxy. And even then, I can't logon since all my nations have "invalid passwords" apparently, and I can't create a new nation since the link to the create nation page doesn't work anymore.
