Can't Access DeviantART - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as deviantart.net

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

I have 2 dA accounts and I'm always simultaneously logged in on both. Right now the one I'm running on Google Chrome is working just fine, but on Mozilla Firefox I get an error message saying "Ooops. The server encountered an internal error. Please consult our help library if you need any assistance." and all the links displayed on that error page redirect to the same page, so I can't access the assistance or anything else.

It's down for me again. It's only DA that won't load for me, so I know it's not my PC. It is the same as it was a few weeks back... the main site page won't even load for me. I get the standard " problem loading page " error message. I'm using the same browser ( Firefox ) that I always have and I haven't changed or added anything recently so I can only figure it's something on DA's end.

Man I still can't upload anything yet I can browse everything just fine now and it looks like everyone else can upload except me. Wtf. When it starts uploading the bar gets to about 90% then just stops and after about 20-30 seconds gives me that same stupid error. Doesn't matter which image I try. Very annoying.

Nicole Duval · 18 May 2014 - 22:23
United States · Frontier Communications · Chrome 34.0 on Windows

Deviantart is literally the only site I can't access right now. At first I got the upload error, but now the page suddenly doesn't exist (According to my Browser). Seesh, the first time I decide to draw something in a month and it's at the same time the site is down. This is really going to discourage me from drawing anything if this shit keeps up.

If the site's being hacked, I wouldn't be surprised if it is some anti-MLP group (But I'm not saying it totally is or anything). Deviantart is the easiest place to find the... Most controversial fan art of nearly any fandom. I hear it get made fun of a LOT with the Brony, Furry, and crappy OC content (Among other stuff. Especially R34). None of my friends think it's a serious art site because of that. It's more known for "bad artists" and art thieves than any other kind of art community user.

The reason why I assume it's anti-brony is because some Anon in that hacking group Anonymous tried to make a move called "Operation MLP" awhile back; to delete everything MLP related off of the internet, and f#!k with the accounts of any and all MLP fans. Their community voted against it (Since I guess Bronies helped a lot to stop SOPA, so they were cool with them), but IDK. Maybe someone for the movement decided to try at it by themselves or something? I've NO idea how Anon works, so I should keep my mouth shut. :x

Who knows? Who cares? Making these interesting but stupid scenarios are a good way to pass the time before I can get on DA again. I mean, it took my like, 5 minutes to write this shit (And you zero seconds to care, I know). Who knows how much longer I've got. Thank god for Netflix and Youtube.

dA, a page that gets money everyday from us can't maintain it, and it doesn't get as much traffic as other pages so there's no excuse

If YouTube can handle MILLIONS OF USERS and MILLIONS OF VIDEOS with mostly being 10 HOURS LONG with no site issues or 500 internal errors. I seriously cannot say why DeviantART keeps having issues every 2 days. I'm going to submit a site report once it's back up.

They don't even care about their glitches with the site. F#!king stupid if you ask me and I'll got over 2000 images uploaded on there. Worse than the annoying 500 error combined. >:(

Well... I can access it via mobile browser. I can even access it from Mozilla on a Windows machine on my LAN. I can't, however, access it from Mozilla or Lynx on my Linux system.
HTTP and HTTP0 requests sent, "Unexpected network read error; connection aborted"
Not sure what's going on. I've cleared my DNS and browser cache, reset my router and my system to no avail.
I have noticed, however, that a traceroute to DA gets an "!X" (administratively prohibited) at hop ae-2.r04.lsanca03.us.bb.gin.ntt.net (129.250.5.70). What I don't know, is if that's always been the case or not, as I get the same thing running tracert on Windows as well (even though I can access the site on that system). Also strange, a port scan of DA's IP (which I'm assuming is really a firewall or external router), shows about a thousand open ports.

So let me get this strait, it works on my mobile but not my PC? Wow. I seriously need this to be resolved asap, seeing I was filling out replies to commissions and other art trades.. Oi oi oi... This is getting very annoying!! This is what, the 2nd or 3rd time this week? It shows here that it's working but I tried to load DA on 3 different devices / browsers, and it sometimes does and doesn't load. So inconsistent!
I'm trying to have a conversation with a good friend of mine from a far away country. The fact that I can't reply to her is pissing me off.
If the DA staff want to do whatever they are doing like repairs or whatnot, at least leave a warning in advance!

@Wolf Mackenzie "It is known enough to be attacked, but it should have enough security to ward against this better."

When sites like Netflix and eBay are going down as a result of the attacks, I think you need to reconsider just how much security you expect, especially for a website that most members use for free. This clearly isn't a simple issue to tackle otherwise it wouldn't still be ongoing.

Alexandra Rønning · 11 May 2014 - 03:50

This is definitely not only annoying, but also very inconvenient. I check dA two times per. day (apart from off days, like today) and those two times a day I am reliant on being able to take commissions, confirm adoptable sales, etc. and guess what? Yeah, I get the site for about 5-10 minutes before it fails.

It's down for me right now, luckily I managed to send out the orders before it crashed. I would ask the dA staff to please publicly address this issue if nothing else.

Deviantart has being on and off intermittently for the last 8 hours for me. It was cutting out almost constantly 8 hours ago, happening a little less now but still happening.

Maybe a certain group got tired of DDoS'ing the Steam server and switched to DA. It's behaving like a DDoS attack. It would explain why some are able to log in intermittently, and not others.

Weird that DeviantART is down, while https://support.deviantart.com/home is working fine here..

http://help.deviantart.com/contact/ - you can get to deviantart and use the site as normal from here ;) so the web domain is under some kind of attack?

Edit: Okay, not working anymore.. so there is a attack against them.. hope its not for loooong! :O

Question, is anyone having the SAME ISSUE as me? I'm trying to Log in, (This was before it crashed again, obviously.) But they literally would not let me at all. I was 100% sure that I got the Password right, so I'm not sure what was going wrong. This has happened to me before and I simply had to Clear my Cache, Cookies and everything was alright again... But unfortunately, not this time. Anyone know what is going on? Or how to fix this issue? :/ It's getting rather annoying and I'm pretty sure, it has happened to other people before as well...

Well, at least you guys can log in. I've been trying like Hell to get my account back for three months now. I check four or five times a day to see if my request has been answered. Guess I better not take it for granted, it's just that I wish the staff had A LITTLE empathy. People get depressed, they lash out sometimes. I'm not sure where all this *comfort* nonsense is coming from, a lot of users on Deviantart can get pretty nasty, and some don't even KNOW you or care to get to know you. It's a crapshoot.

Ugh, it does suck that it keeps going down because I rely on the site for reference images -__-

Also, people being rude... it would be nice if you stopped lumping everyone here into one group. I'm not into emo poetry or cosplay so please stop assuming everyone here is. Also, if you don't like the complaining, just... leave?

@Helsing Stroman : For starters, you know an awful lot about the things you seem to think that others are doing with dA. Maybe your are complaining because you can access the stuff you want to look at, and don't' want to 'join the flock'.

You came to check if dA was down like everyone else, meaning you were missing it just as much, or else you'd never have come to look if it was just you or the entire site.

You think that because you are being rude that you will gain a following like you are some sort of God? No people look at you with pity because you have nothing better to do than try to make people who are hurting because the site is down, sadder.

Some of these people, could be physically disabled and being in this online community is their only way. Or there could be other reasons they choose online life verse real life. Whatever the reason, it's no one elses business but their own.

If you wish to keep putting down others, only to make yourself feel good, then I ask you to leave, or at least quit commenting about nonsensical things.

Selene Wolfe · 10 May 2014 - 20:18

@Hellsing You act like you know EVERYTHING. That isn't true some people have commissions open for EMERGENCY reasons, which does make this downtime rough. Also whats it any of your business what people have commissions open for. They want to earn money it's legit, no reason to make fun of them for doing so...

Or you know, Helsing, you could prove yourself to be the bigger person and stop whining about others whining, and do something productive. If you don't even care, why continue to post your rants? It's not really getting you anywhere. So yeah, kudos.

Helsing Stroman · 10 May 2014 - 20:12

I'm pretty sure the people whinging about cosplay photos, interrupted gay yaoi Pokemon RPs, and checking their messages on their latest emo poetry slam aren't looking for an income. And seriously, is three or so hours going to put that much of a dent on your little pocket "$20 for a full body" animu commissions? If people want to buy from you, they'll do it and they'll wait for the site to come back up because they want it that much. The site being down for A FEW HOURS (not days, weeks, months, etc., like some sites such as FurAffinity, which SERIOUSLY put a damper on artists being unable to access the site for MONTHS) isn't going to delay anything that someone wants. Anyone who's professionally working for an income isn't going to be mired by one website; they probably have work coming in from all sorts of areas; and everyone else is just little teenyboppers and college students wanting to save up a few bucks for a new tablet or Pokemon XYZ game for their 3DS.

-ugg the day I actually decide to be confident and post and do some adopts to earn much needed funds... DA is down for the count. it's being a tease too. with the fixing it's self and then dying again.

Selene Wolfe · 10 May 2014 - 20:05

Ugh people use dA for important stuff to you know. Like commissions to earn money and stuff. This site can be the only way of contacting people about that, since people don't typically give out emails. How are you supposed to get commission requests when the site is down and no one has a way to contact you if they want art?... If you think dA is such a terrible site then WHY are you LURKING here? The people that are on here should only care about the site being down, not complaining at the people that actually care that it's down... Hypocrite is what you people are, saying grow up and stuff when you're doing something just as bad if not worse. Go look in the mirror and figure out who has to grow up. Seriously sometimes people get on my nerves...

Eva Huang · 10 May 2014 - 20:03

@Helsing

Look at this for a while.

dA is not just any random website on the internet. It is an outlet for emotions, art, and an inlet for money.

Some people actually DEPEND on dA for income, depend on their access to one website. That is something to cry over.

Some people use dA as a source of comfort. They could be going through something in their life- something horrible. Depression. Cutting. Death in their family. dA is a place where people are willing to help.

Some people use dA as a way to find their place in the world. In real life, outside of art, sometimes I feel kind of off-beat, kind of outdated. In dA? I feel like I fit there for once.

Everyone on dA uses it for a reason. Please don't pretend that all of those reasons are petty things.

Tyler Henson · 10 May 2014 - 20:03
United States · Verizon FiOS

I have no problem with the site being down. I'm studying and working on owed art. What I have a problem with is that dA has said nothing on FB or twitter about their outage even acknowledging the issue. That'd stop the troll-feed on their FB page.

Helsing Stroman · 10 May 2014 - 19:58
United States · Verizon FiOS

I think the reason why people are making fun of those "crying" over DeviantART is because in the grand scheme of things, crying over a site being down for a couple of hours sounds like you have absolutely no life and that you're a mopey manchild. So you can't RP with someone or look at cosplay photos. It's not worth "sobbing" over or getting all riled up about. Don't you have anything better to do? Can't you just go, "Oh, that sucks", and go pull up another website or watch a movie? Whinging and throwing a tantrum over something as insignificant as having to OH NO WAIT a few hours to send a note over to someone is something that little babies do. They have no sense of patience and when they don't get something NOW, they throw a fit. You guys aren't babies. You can't think of an adult-like way to handle an inconvenience?

Eva Huang · 10 May 2014 - 19:55

Aaaand it went down again.

Welp. I guess that means that everyone starts trolling again.

Please just realize that trolling will not help you in any way. Nor will replying to trolls. Don't feed trolls, they'll just get larger.

I'm having trouble getting the DA website to load, but this site tells me it's on my end. However, seeing all the comments here at the same time with similar problems and considering the fact that I'm not having trouble with any other website, I'd imagine the info here is incorrect.

Listen to everyone trying to bash those who are upset!

It's not just about using the site. Deviantart is used for more than just posting pictures. Some people use it as a form of self help - sharing things like poetry to pictures to get through things. Some people talk to others - either in serious forms like someone who just mentioned they were helping a person vent and others who just want to relax with a good friend or something, and sometimes this time is limited so when a site is down, unannounced, for an hour this is a big thing.

Many people use dA as a form of income. So to have it down where you can not get to commissions, auctions, critiques and so on is a huge deal for them.
Some use it as a source for school, and that always has due dates.

To those who RP, for the folks who do Novella replies its not to big a deal but those who rapid fire one line to para or so, it basically cuts everything off for a while.

The person saying that "people who say this shouldn't happen to a site like dA don't know how the internet" works lemme say this... Tumblr has it's outages but not nearly every week. Facebook has outages once every few months. twitter has at most a fail whale which it hasn't gotten hardly at all since the new API.

So therefore there is no excuse. If other sites, big and small, can handle themselves why is it so hard for this widely used site?

Yes, shit happens. Sites go down. But Deviantart isn't the busiest site, nor is it the slowest, it should be able to handle traffic load. It is known enough to be attacked, but it should have enough security to ward against this better.

It is overall an extremely buggy site. It has minor bugs and glitches and crashes many times every week. It has major crashes like this extremely often. I can see once in a while - I would be surprised if it didn't go down occasionally... but not like this. That is inexcusable.

If it's glitchy coding or servers they need to fully take the site down every month for maintenance. A site I use to RP does this. Although the 2-5 hour down time is annoying it's announced days in advance. If this is what dA needs to do to fix itself then so be it. It would be better then crashing as often as it does.

When people say "it's out.... again" there is an issue. We should not be used to this.

I don't think anyone would complain (Or at least much) if it happened the same amount as any other site... which means it happens but not so common that you expect it. But no... this site has it happen a -lot- and that is the issue. That is why so many people are pissed off. Not so much that it's down... but that it's down "again."

This way we realize how much we need deviantart and how much we would miss it, if it would rot. It is a really positive site, they host all these images of yours for free, though there might be some trash, you can find so much beauty on this site.. amazing!

Samuel Sadi · 10 May 2014 - 19:41

@Samantha: Yes but dA is also one of the biggest sites for Art, of all kinds, this server has to deal with LARGE loads of submits, favorites, images being posted to several groups, favorites, folders. It has a lot on it's plate. It goes down a lot, because it has a large work load.

Fucking stupid... I know that sites crash sometimes, but DA has the most crashes I've EVER seen. It came up for a moment, but then the site froze up and I couldn't do shit. Tried refreshing and it went offline! I've got comic pages to post TT-TT
I hope they get these problems resolved soon

Anyone bitching about how "this shouldn't happen to a site like DA" CLEARLY has no idea how the internet works. Shut up and wait. First world problems, much?
And please, anyone posting traced screencaps, just move to Tumblr. It's less junk the rest of us will have to sift through to get to the good art.

WillNot Comeon · 10 May 2014 - 19:26

@Marci-Joy Clark
Although I do agree that people should calm down about it, since it will come back up eventually; some people actually do have to do important things such as commission work to EARN MONEY. Or maybe, if not even that, they have to do things that is important to them, and possibly other people. So quit talking as if you know anything about others. Really the only idiot I see here is you for actually attempting to assume anything about people you don't even know.

Rin Satsu · 10 May 2014 - 19:25

More than likely it's because the American government just killed net neutrality and ISPs can slow certain websites. If dA aren't paying the ransom to providers, they're not getting the speed boost.
Doesn't matter really, you can get a much better service at Pixiv.com anyway.

Andie Basciani · 10 May 2014 - 19:24

This is rather f#!king ridiculous. A site like dA shouldn't be having this problem. It would be one thing if it was down and stayed that way for a while, then came back stronger than ever.

But NO. It keeps going up, then going back down again, then coming back up.... And what makes it worse, is that this ISN'T the first time it's done this. It did it yesterday as well. We all have a reason to be annoyed with dA right now, I know I am.

Samuel Sadi · 10 May 2014 - 19:21

Things happen, life will continue. And yes as someone put a few seconds ago, (rather rudely, anyways) Always use a Word Program, for cases like this. That way it's not lost.

Marci-Joy Clark · 10 May 2014 - 19:18

Jesus Christ, people. Calm the f#!k down. If you're dumb enough to try and submit a written work without actually writing it in a word processing program, you're an idiot. Tough shit, you lost your (probably horrible) poetry, or emo story about how you cut yourself.
F#ck. DA isn't life. Websites go down. Get a goddamn grip.
