Fix DNS Problems

Allen, Yes the same thing happened to me! my account with lycos is set to auto-renew but apparently they did not pay it to registrar and now i have to pay them directly to get my site up again... but not able to get auth code to transfer antoher host as lycos is down and not responding... this has been an incredibly frustrating fiasco!! ...

Danger Signs? My domain site's registration renewal fell due during the outage and as Lycos didn't pay it on time my site shows an expiry notice. Despite requesting action three days ago I have had no response. The result is my site has been inaccessible using my domain name for six days through the mistakes and inactions of Lycos..

I haven't tried logging in all day, but I just tried and was told I have to wait 10 minutes before trying again. It went on to say something about an incorrect password and to fill out a support ticket for help in creating a new one (????).

Herman Bomback.. this is the 2nd time I have been down for days with Lycos with no answer and loss of business on my website as I have 2 domains on Lycos. I am back up and running now. I can't tell you what to do but I am in the middle of a domain transfer to the company that hosts my website. I can't take the risk anymore and I do not like not having a warning or communication from them. It lso scares me that they are in India now and also filed bankrupcy. I can see a server going down for a few hours but 3-4 days without websites up and running is nuts. That's my two cents and I wish you all the best!

LYCOS formally owned by Ybrant Digital Limited, has been sold to a company in Hyderabad, India. So that is why the entire site was down for 3 days, and no one knew what was going going on. The site was being transferred to INDIA !!!!!!

Feeling optimistic hearing that other sites are coming back online. Today was the first day that I was able to login to Lycos Domains. Everything looks 'normal' there and I'm able to login to my domain email, however it stops at last Wednesday and nothing new. I'm wondering what people are seeing when they enter their web site name into a browser? I am getting the message of "related links" and when I use this site ( it says that my site " is PARKED. The website is either expired or listed for sale"... Has anyone else experience these things prior to their site coming back up?

I recieved an email saying my card was not able to be processed. I have been trying for 5 days to get on angelfire to update my billing information but nothing is working. I agree Bryan Ryley, I am done as well. This has/is a nightmare but I feel better having initiated a transfer and have a new domain that I can at least get online to and send customers somewhere. I have had my old domain for over 10 years though and it would be huge retail hit if it has to go down altogether. I am thinking Tucows will comply (by law they have to?) so hoping. Bryan Ryley, I have started a transfer of domian through Weebly and have contacted Tucows (where Whois states has my domain) regarding unlocking the domain. (I also purchased a new domain so that my web site could be up and running to at least get my customers somewhere to go and purchase, etc). If Lycos is down for good at least I have the transfer initiated. I am waiting for them to unlock my whois first, then will go to the next step.

Been down for two days for me too. 14:00 on Thursday was my last phone refresh. My husband is a NW engineer and says for a planned update there should have been warning and it should only have lasted 2-4 hours, not two days. To those of you posting any type of valid contact information for Tucows, lawyers, CSC, etc. - thank you!

I have opened an account with, and asked them about transferring my domain FIRST. They said there are specific steps in doing that, and there is information that you need from your current registrar in order to implement the transfer. And even if you get that, it will take 7 days for the transfer to complete. In light of this, I bought a new domain. IF I'm able to access my old domain, I will use it to refer clients to my new domain and web site.

For those of you who have sites built with Trellix ... does support FTP transfers and Trellix. They are located in Iillinois, and they have a customer service number where you can talk to a REAL PERSON. I built a couple of web sites on their server for clients using their more-updated version of Trellix. Those sites have NEVER been down, and the customer service dept usually is very fast and efficient in solving any issues you might have. IF you have a backup of your site using Trellix, I would seek them out. Even their basic package comes with a free domain address for 1 year. The disk space is more limited than the Lycos packages were but, if you have a basic 6-8 page web site, you should be fine. Domain mail is also included.

I learned recently after there was a problem with my domain name being renewed that lycos isn't a registrar but works with 3 different registrars that actually host our domains.

"2.5.2 Registrar Terms and Conditions. Lycos Domains will use one of three Registrars for your Domain Name: Melbourne IT Limited, Co., or, Inc. The choice of Registrar will be determined in accordance with the paragraphs immediately below. For the avoidance of doubt, the Registrar for your Domain Name will be identified on your domain management page."

If you can determine which registrar lycos uses for your domain maybe you can contact them and see what can be done.

Good to know Bryan, thank you! I opened a ticket and am now in chat with Weebly the support agent said to start a domain transfer immediately..the tech is not impressed and seems cynical about a Lycos reboot. I am initiating a transfer and buying a new domain. It's at least moving myself forward.

As others have said, open a ticket with tucows compliance I spoke with Tucows, They said there is a way to transfer domains if the provider (lycos) is unresponsive. And that I should recieve a response from Tucows compliance and they will help bypass Lycos to transfer my domains. We will see how long it takes.

Thank you for the compliance email, I sent an email to them and thank you for the attorney contact information for Lycos, I will be calling them. I agree with the others that suggested we all complain, call and email Tucows and the lawyers. We have a right to our property and have losses totalling because we are down. I'd cry except it would do no good. Even the black lab on their website looks like he's ready to run away.

I have gone the distance. I contacted CRC listed for lycos on whois. They can't give me any information because lycos is their client. But they have a backdoor contact who says it will be up. Well, that was three days ago. I contacted tucows who is the registrar for lycos and they gave me a compliance email address If everyone will send a support ticket email to them, perhaps collectively we can get something from lycos other than their front page where now they're trying to sell us wearable something or other. If they can post that, they can post something telling us what's going on. On the whois page there are invalid phone numbers, plus whois and the internet have three different addresses for lycos plus two different phone numbers none of which are valid. It seems like the email problem is accessing on mobile devices. I have my email forwarded to another/alternate email. So my emails are coming to mobile devices from Lycos through another account. The problem is, I can't respond using lycos on the mobile devices. However, I can access the account on a computer or laptop. I think there is a major problem with their system though. I have been getting a lot of spam and I told them on several occasions and they never could seem to correct the problem. I don't want to change accounts because I have has this one for years, they may give us no other option.

It looks like the link DOES work. If you click 'Mail' on the page, your Lycos email account should open as normal via hostedemail. I've just done it and all inward messages are there, none apparently missing. I've also just sent a test message to another address and it worked, so it seems this is the way forward at the moment. I usually have my Lycos account linked to Outlook, but that isn't working.

Lycos email has been out of action since 2100GMT Wednesday 15 June (that's the time of the last email I received). The message on has been unchanged for 48 hours, mentioning an upgrade and promising to be 'back in a few hours'. However, from news items it seems the Indian company that owns Lycos (Ybrant Digital) may be in financial trouble, and my attempts to contact it by phone and email have failed. All we can do is hope and wait - and perhaps set up a new email account with another server!

My business site is STILL not up, nor can I log into my account on I have been putting out fires the last 24 hours due to the site outage, and am crippled in dealing with clients (whom I usually precreen via web form on my web site). I'm having to create email forms on the fly to cover content not available on my site. I decided not to wait anymore, and bought a new domain and service through - I'm starting to build a new site. Awhile back, I came across this NY Times article about a lawyer out of Chicago who is "the most hated lawyer in Silicone Valley", Jay Edelson. I just popped him a private note on Facebook about our situation, because he seems to be the guy for tech-related class action law suits. - and NY Times article link:

I agree, this is unconcionable! There was no warning or notice of the server going down, it just happened and we are left trying to figure out how to access our websites and domains. I can't even imagine the loss of business not just myself but everyone else who depend upon our site for income, information, etc. I am starting to get really worried as this 'site update' message is a cover and they have cut and run. I have not been able to publish my website which is an animal sanctuary, for two days now. CSC is the company that sells webspace to lycos and even they can't get a definitive answer. check out whois lycos and the poor guy who used to work for them is still listed as their admin. there's no way to reach them by email or phone. now they have a front page that says back In a few hours, but that's days and still nothing. If I could use another company, I would. My problem is that my website builder program is Trellix. I have the whole thing on my computer, BUT after a lot of searching for a long time, I was only able to find Lycos Tripod to host and publish the site. Anyone have any ideas?
I have called CSC and spoken with Jennifer and emailed with Monica Doucette. Monica handles the lycos account. She says she has spoken (or emailed) with her "contact " at Lycos and they are "working on it." All I know is, it seems Lycos is leaving a lot of us in the lurch and if I had another place to take my business to publish Trellix, I would. This lack of communication on the part of Lycos is unconscionable.

The above link may help some of you. Place any URL into its search engine and it will display the said website as it appeared from days/months/years gone by. What you can do from there is right click anywhere on the desired website, and "view source," to copy its HTML. This method has helped me in the past, at times, retrieve an old layout style, deleted text, photo, etc. It won't fix our current issues with Lycos/Angelfire, etc, but might help someone out there.

Lycos/Tripod is down for eveyone I know who has a website or other service with that company. It's not just for me or for a few. They cannot be reached in any way that I know of.

The quesrion is, were they hacked or did the company go under? What happened?

Yes, I see that there is some progress being made, but I'm wondering what my site is going to look like when the data transfer is done. I still have my site built on a customizable Trellix template. I wonder if the new server is going to support those, or my site will be total crap when everything comes back up... If I have to start over, I'm going someplace else.

My website is down with angelfire being down. Have been a paid user for years. Just got a notification that they will be billing me. Hopefully that means I will at least have time to make backups of my pages!

I have been a customer of Lycos since the 90's - been with them through good times and bad ... this is by far the worst encounter yet. I almost left them about 5 months ago when it became increasingly difficult to get a response and when domain issues started happening.

Has anyone had problems with weird messages from Melbourne - in the form of your website is about to expire etc - when I contacted both Melbourne and Lycos - they said it was sorted out - do you think we need to be concerned that Lycos has jeopardized our url addresses because they didn't keep current with their suppliers?

I have not been able to get any perspective on what is going on or why nothing in the Lycos world is working

I have not been able to access my websites or domains for 48 hours. I've been with them for over 10 years. Fingers crossed and hoping they get up and running but my hope is quickly fading. Sad.

Yeah, right. I think the "working on upgrading your service" is a red herring.
