Can't Access Citizens Bank - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as citizensbankonline.com

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

Bill Covino · 7 March 2013 - 04:59

Terrible site, down much more than other sites. Loosing confidence in this bank, every year it gets worse and worse, and the CCO site is even worse.

Lisa Hildreth · 7 March 2013 - 04:23

Citizens is down again. It's down all the time. Their system must not be very secure and easy to hack because they are ALWAYS, weekly having problems with intermittent connections. Someone should get fired for this. It certainly doesn't give confidence to customers knowing that their accounts could be compromised. This isn't an uncommon occurrence.

The site seems to be down right now. I tired 2 different browsers and cleared the cache too.

Diane Dodds · 25 January 2013 - 14:14

I just talked to a supervisor for Charter One. Our accounts have not been compromised and they are working at getting everything back in working order as quickly as possible. There have been many banks and large companies attacked or the last few months and they can't block these attacks unless they block us as well. So we need to understand it's not the bank, it's these bad guys to be upset with. Go read about DDoS and you'll understand more about what's going on. Basically they plant a virus on people's computers and then use those computers, the computer owner being unaware that is is happening, and they flood the site with traffic that their servers can't handle.

Eric Labonte · 25 January 2013 - 13:35
United States · Time Warner Cable

Here is an email I received from Citizens this morning:

Dear Online Banking Customer:

Since yesterday, January 24th, our website has experienced temporary disruptions due to an unusually high volume of Internet traffic, similar to disruptions that recently have impacted other U.S. banks. This excessive traffic, commonly known as a distributed denial of service (DDoS), prevents our customers from accessing our Online and Mobile Banking services.

As a result, you may experience slow response times or issues with the availability of Online and Mobile Banking. We are working to restore these services as quickly as possible and want to assure you that customer accounts and personal information were not compromised. For immediate service, please visit one of our branches and ATMs, or call our 24/7 Customer Contact Center at 800.922.9999.

Additionally, if you incur any fees due to this disruption in service, please speak with a banker at your local branch or call our Customer Contact Center.

We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this issue.

Sincerely,
Theresa M. McLaughlin
Group EVP, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer
RBS Citizens Financial Group

Bummer, iphone app and main website are both down atm :( On the app it eventually moved past the log in screen in a few minutes, but the safe image did not display (the phrase was there though) I didn't feel like risking it.

Paul Elliott · 25 January 2013 - 10:21
United States · Comcast Cable

I've been having problems actually logging in to the website for three days now. I can see the main page fine, but I cannot log into my account. Silly how we rely so much on the internet---I know I do it too, but we can still call the bank or drive there... this is the price of convenience I guess. I don't think i'ts too mysterious, I guess there is a rumor that several online banks have been attacked and this is part of that. --- We should always be vigilant that we know what to do outside of technology for instances like this--it makes us weaker to be affected by it--so let's gather our strength and remember how to bank without the internet, or how to manage our money without a bank ;)

Justin Bucci · 25 January 2013 - 10:16

Citizens Bank experienced a major DDoS attack today. It began around 12:30 and lasted for several hours. They are up on contingency servers and in some cases one leg of redundant servers.

Michael Lafleur · 24 January 2013 - 11:56

Accessing from your cache will load the website as it was when you last visited it. You are not seeing live traffic from their server (if the server is down its not just the front page) you are seeing the data that was stored on your computer the last time you were on that site.

Bill Neiman · 24 January 2013 - 11:39
United States · Verizon FiOS

why cant i get on this is not good

Tyler Fortier · 24 January 2013 - 10:51

Staci Morel · 2 September 2012 - 07:23

so citizensbank.com seems to be down, mostly due to a hack or DDoS attack i'm guessing. i did find a workaround. if you load up the Google Cache and click login from there, it seems all the other citizens pages work fine and i was able to login. its only the front page thats mysteriously not working.

Brendan MC · 2 September 2012 - 07:09

tried to log on to citizens --says server is down --tried on 2 different computers...

Lynnette Hagerty · 2 September 2012 - 04:33
