Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

As of late I have had constant problems with bluehost. Slow site loading, sporadic downtime... not sure what's going on. Is it possible the shared server I'm on has something going on with it? It's at the point where I'm ready to switch hosting companies and I have 5+ sites here

Bluehost is down for us now. I spoke with them and they said unexpected maintenance is taking place, Should be an hour or so... but sometimes with bluehost estimations, an hour means 8 hours.

BlueHost used to be so reliable, what happened? We've been with them for about five years and never had problems until the past year or so. The past week has been especially bad - our corporate email and website have been down and up dozens of times just over that past week! I called tech support at 888-401-4678, waited on hold for 20 minutes, and then the guy I got said that we need to upgrade to the $15.99 a month plan if we want our account to be on a "more reliable" server which gets "more attention" from their support staff. The tech support guy said we should expect to have outages with the $9.99 per month plan we are on. Really??

Bluehost has continuously problems! I have tons of alerts of our monitoring systems for non-reachability of our sites.
Today we have the best: all our site are disappeared! It's not a problem of reachability, doesn’t exist anymore the root directory of our hosting!!
Don't trust Wordpress.org that has certified Bluehost.com as the best wordpress hosting in the world.
For me Bluehost is the worst hosting I ever seen and today we will move forward!

My Bluehost site has been down for more than 13 hours now. This is not the first time in in the few scant months I have been with BH, having moved there only because my new site designer liked working them. In the several years I was with HostGator, for my most complicated site, and with GoDaddy for a couple of simple static sites, I never had one single problem. I imagine I will be switching back soon.

This is the error code/message that I'm getting today when logging into WordPress. Hmmmmm.

Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.
•Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
•Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
•Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

Whelp, as usual, the service is down. This seems to happen every single night lately. All of my clients and my business partner prefer Bluehost. I've personally been with Hostgator since 06 and never had a single issue. I don't even get mad anymore. I just look at the time, notice it's about 9-10PM and expect the service to crash.

I can't access my website... when I put my URL into the Google tool bar I get an error message. When I called Bluehost I waited for twenty minutes and finally hung up. Then I went online to the Bluehost site to get online help and waited for about another fifteen minutes. So I hung up. If Bluehost can't answer my question about why my URL isn't being accepted then I will hang up on BlueHost.

I had stuck with Bluehost through all previous outages but this latest 28hr outage was the last straw for me. I'm so happy that I didn't pay for my VPN a year in advance like their CS wanted me to. I've moved my VPS to KnownHost who do offer a 99.9% uptime SLA, for every 0.1% below 99.9% uptime, they refund you 10% of your monthly costs; so if it drops to 99% uptime you'll get a free month. Nice to see a host put their money where their mouth is!

Blue host owes it to their customers to keep communication open. You can't call and reach a single person. I called them last night about 9"00pm and I was told 1 -2 hrs . This appears to be the standard answer. Blue host will loose customers due to lack of communication.

Here's something to think about folks. The chances of your site being hacked at Bluehost are about 1 in 200, 000, but the chances of Bluehost technical incompetence taking your site down in the next 12 months: 7 in 10.

One more thought for all of you thinking that "this too shall pass": I've been here three times now with my sites down. Each time Bluehost told me they were upgrading and that the problem would be solved, and it would be smooth sailing into the future. Turned out to be false--three times. I'm not waiting around again for this to happen. Fool me once, shame on Bluehost, fool me three times, shame shame shame on me for staying with Bluehost.

The only information coming from Bluehost is apologies, they offer no real information that we business people can base decisions on. Our partners in business are not helping us decide what is best for our businesses. I think they are scared to give us the real information fearing too many people will leave. That may be the case but the information should be shared so WE can decide. I was able to login to my CP and extract my files. Others that are still down might be able to do the same.

It's so bad right now at Bluehost, they are not answering the phones. Bluehost is in serious trouble folks. No one knows when our sites will be back up. Could be never.

Lets all sue. Even if we signed a contract saying that their downtime is not there fault, it does not mean we all don't have a case. This could be a class action lawsuit. I have a stock market site and we lost paying members today. Some of our paid members are multimillionaires. There are very unhappy. So if we all get together we can settle this in court easy. Again, yes their is a contract but that does not make it legal. You can sign a contract that gives you the right to kill your friend but it would still be illegal.

This would never happen years ago but the last 12 months BH has been down a lot more frequently, perhaps it is being targetted more? perhaps this is because of Heartbleed? My sites have been down for a full day. This is the third time my sites have been down with BH. What a nightmare, and my sites are still down and it's 8:25 p.m.. No doubt I need to move my sites to a reliable service, but what a hassle that will be. Who in the world has a reliable service better than BH? I honestly don't know, and any of those services who call me will tell me anything. How do I know who is reliable? I am very upset with Bluehost, and I cannot even calculate how much I have lost because my sites have been down all day.

If I could access my server I would have already switched to a new provider. Bluehost's best chance at keeping me now is to continue ensuring my server is unavailable as I may continue paying just in case it ever does become available. The moment it's up -> I'm gone.

Edit: Let's say BlueHost had a 99.9% up time guarantee. At this point, my site would have to be accessible every single second for 500 straight days.

Apparently when EIG (Endurance International Group) acquired Bluehost, they tried to make some data center changes. One of their techs let that slip during one of the previous outages in 2013 (it wasn't the really big one in August, it was another outage only an hour long or so). Obviously they didn't get it right and still haven't gotten it right:

Another multiple-hour outage so soon after the New Year's Eve outage. It gets worse and worse. I've started moving to LiquidWeb which seems to be better VPS for about the same money, and they actually seem to care about their uptime. I know there are lots of things that can cause outages but BlueHost doesn't offer any explanation, particularly to VPS customers who are paying big $$$ and getting this kind of crappy uptime performance. I think BlueHost got acquired by some big holding group and they have turned to complete crap under the new management, probably all their good techs are moving away too (if they haven't already).

My dedicated VPS server on BlueHost has been down for 3 hours, taking our website and company email down with it. I tried calling Tech Support but they were having phone problems and couldn't hear me. Then I tried CHAT but couldn't connect, so I finally was able to submit a support ticket on my 6th try. aAARGH! Its up. Its down. Its up. Its down. For the last 2 hours its been spotty (email). I sneak in a couple emails, then its down for 20 minutes, then I sneak in another email. Just hoping that they are being delivered and I am receiving all responses. Not the most efficient way to conduct business, Bluehost!

My site is down too, and I'm not sure how many of my bluehost sites are down. This is the third time in so many months. Is bluehost getting to be unreliable? This is no way for me to run a business that is Internet dependant. Not happy about how bluehost is not using mirror systems or automatic backups systems that transfer without a glitch. Apparently bluehost doesn't know how to do that.

I've had some sites with them for about 6 months now and in general when they are up and running they are great. I'm a bit disappointed at the number of outages I had in the past 6 months. Pingdom says that since Oct 1st I've had 9h 37m of downtime on 154 separate occasions. At least 3 of them that I recall were during the business day and none of them were planed maintenance, at least as far as I was told.

While Bluehost is "UP" right now, I am getting this error: "Your domain cannot be assigned at this time. To avoid potential problems, all domain operations have been paused on this server while a reported issue is investigated and resolved. Please wait a few minutes and try again. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If this problem persists, please contact Customer Support." Annoying.

I have been with BH for years and have many client sites hosted here. I also have many client sites hosted on GoDaddy and I have NEVER had issues with GD like here. I am in the process of moving all to GoDaddy. This is assenine as I cannot conduct MY business without email, and reflects poorly on me. I have given BH benefit of doubt over and over, now I am over.

It doesn't seem to matter where you go - they all seem to suck these days. I have been through 10 hosts in the past year - all had major problems that caused me downtime, lost clients and major stress. The only solution is to have a second instance of your site hosted on a completely separate server, and use a failover dns solution like dnsmadeeasy.com

Bluehost is *barely* up at the moment. As in the site loads, but logging into the control panel brings up a "Service Unavailable" message after a several minute cursor spin. Our hosted site is down as well.

Yep - took the bait and did VPS because they got me blacklisted & VPS has been even more problems. Some techs know what they're talking about and others don't (like anywhere I guess) - but way too many outages and "connectivity" issues - time to look for a new host - now I'll be a refugee from 1and1 and Bluehost. Anyone know how Yahoo is? other suggestions?

VPS is down more often than their shared hosting, does not make sense. Have a shared hosting account and it goes down, but it is somewhat rare. Added VPA and I have had VPS hosting for 1 month now and I had to contact TechSupport 4 times dues to control panel issues. Now just down. Sucks

am really tired of Bluehost - was a refugee form 1and1 - but Bluehost has been a source of lots of new problems... servers become inaccessible - butthey call it a connectivity issue - ratyher than being down - January 2014, adn now again in March and April - was falsely acused of being a spammer so I switched to their VPS - and now they are down all the time. They also have phone queue problems, long wait time arrrrghhh

sites are very slow, support keeps saying it's due to throttling, but there is not indication of throttling in cpanel. I'm have no confidence in their support - also seems like there was an issue judging by other responses here. Starting to migrate my sites to another host, going to try Geek Storage. Geek Storage currently has a coupon running 30OFF4LIFE. Tired, tired, tired of Bluehost.

Bluehost is still down! I did get through to their tech support after being on hold for more than 20 minutes and they said that there is some internal issues with some servers. This network issue could take 15 - 45 minutes to repair. Well that was an hour ago that I received that communication! And still can't access my server or websites.

Finally made it through to chat support after holding for 30 minutes, and they had a "recording" talk to me like it was a real person telling me they're aware of the issues and are trying to fix it. I know it was a recording because no matter what I said "he" didn't respond, but kept saying things like "I hope you can hear me, I can't hear you but...". Yikes. I'll be moving to a different host ASAP.

Yep, definitely down. Online chat doesn't work, logging in to cpanel says I'm locked out because of too many bad login attempts, ticket system is broken, and I've been on hold for 15 minutes. Site is down as well. What a miserable experience.

And now a 30 minute wait time for chat that I finally "got through"? Ridiculous!

Bluehost is definitely down.
My websites are up but I can't access my Cpanel at all. Their server is not responding and their chat support is not functioning I get a message says couldn't connect to server!! Seriously!!! They became so bad I can't even believe I have paid for their service. And their ticketing system is down too. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS SHIT

Our website is also in box 709 and the website has been down all day and we have not received email since yesterday. Notice on Bluehost system status still reads: "02/12/2014 08:16am: All homes are in the process of restoring." It is now 6:40 pm and no website or emails.

Firefox seems to reach my site, no other browser does. Try that on your own and see if it works. It may be a temporary workaround until they fix the DNS server problem.

Can also confirm that my site is currently not loading. I've been working for the last few months on the site, and one month since I've gone with Bluehost. I've been promoting a site launch on February 10, 30 min from now. Now what? If Bluehost doesn't resolve this problem ASAP, I will go with a new hosting service.
