Can't Access Television Tropes - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

Matthias Preissl · 5 September 2013 - 11:38

I suspect their database server is dead. The site front-end is obviously still there, but database requests return empty results. If I'm right, it's just a matter of restoring from backups. There may be some rollbacks, depending on how frequently those backups happened, but most of it should be back soon enough.

Chris Hill · 5 September 2013 - 04:31

The articles appear to have vanished. And when I tried to open a page that I'd visited previously, it also told me that the site had deleted my account cookies (though I have no idea why) and logged me out involuntarily.

Arthur Moore · 5 September 2013 - 04:07

The home page works fine at the moment, but not only does going anywhere on the site take ages to load, but attempting to click a search result links to a page in the "main" namespace claiming that the site doesn't have a page for that article, even when it does. Something is seriously wrong on this site's end.

Michael Demiurga · 5 September 2013 - 03:32

@Euan What's their Twitter page? There are several TV tropes-es on Twitter.

Jewa Kogan · 21 March 2013 - 13:09

Well, two cheers on the last part. Third one will be added when it's actually up again.

Euan Davidson · 21 March 2013 - 13:07
United Kingdom · BT

The TVTropes Twitter confirmed it was a DoS attack and they'll be back up as soon as possible.

Jay Daniel Missler · 21 March 2013 - 13:04
United States · Comcast Cable

But if TV Tropes is down how am I supposed to study fiction during my free time?

Nicholas Tsoukalis · 21 March 2013 - 13:03
Canada · Bell Canada

Robert Clarke: Actually, the Google situation and the content policy incident are separate, though the former was what helped Eddie invoke the latter... Even though he went Judge Claude Frollo on some works and just deleted them without discretion... He actually removed Lolita and promised to bring it back AFTER every Anime gets removed or something. Some people got ticked off with him for that.

Sean Hutton · 21 March 2013 - 13:03
Australia · iiNet Limited

Does anyone know is Capital One Financing could actually have something to do with how TV Tropes manages it's finances? I suppose they could owe them money? Sounds like a long shot, but it's a possibility.

I'll err on the side of hacking given the Wikipedia edit, but that could have been an opportunist.

John F. Wozniak · 21 March 2013 - 12:58
United States · AT&T U-verse

@Molua I googled it. It's owned by Capital One for online bill pay, but not, apparently, available from outside the main site, if at all.

Gonçalo Moura · 21 March 2013 - 12:56
United States · PacketExchange

@Chris Monthie: Thanks for the info. Let's hope it'll be back to normal.

Molua Young · 21 March 2013 - 12:55
United Kingdom · Virgin Media

PANIC! EVERYONE PANIC! Okay though, really, shiz gettin' real. What does sparkpay mean?

Chris Monthie · 21 March 2013 - 12:54
United States · PacketExchange

There was a lot of hubbub about content policy when they removed all the rape tropes and related stuff during that time.

Gonçalo Moura · 21 March 2013 - 12:52
Portugal · PT Comunicacoes

@Chris Monthie: Why are said folks upset with TV Tropes since last year?

Robert Clarke · 21 March 2013 - 12:51
United States · Comcast Cable

From what I gather so far, this appears to be a hacking attack. I mean, I knew a bunch of people were bitter about the content policy and shift towards NPOV, but this is just... beyond wrong, and for such a needless cause.

Euan Davidson · 21 March 2013 - 12:47
United Kingdom · BT

Those Wikipedia edits were made by the one person who only ever made those changes and nothing else to TVTropes.

John F. Wozniak · 21 March 2013 - 12:44
United States · AT&T U-verse

@Jewa It was edited back a half hour after it was first edited to past tense. Let's see how long that lasts.

Chris Monthie · 21 March 2013 - 12:44
United States · PacketExchange

The sparkpay thing (request for username/password) is fairly recent, probably within half an hour or so. But the server hasn't been responding for at least three hours now. The wikipedia talk page now has a section about whether or not it's been closed, but there's no confirmed word either way. Looks like a hacker attack to me. I know lots of folks have been upset with TV Tropes since at least summer of 2012, so it's not beyond possibility.

Euan Davidson · 21 March 2013 - 12:44
United Kingdom · BT

Yeah I'm getting that sparkpay stuff too. I'm wondering if someone hijacked it.

Jewa Kogan · 21 March 2013 - 12:43

Like this day could have gotten any worse. Btw, Other Wiki is all present tense for me.

John F. Wozniak · 21 March 2013 - 12:41
United States · AT&T U-verse

Oh, it's been down that long? The revision was 18:58 (43min), the current re-revision is 19:31 (9 minutes ago). I was going by the time they gave here, though.

John F. Wozniak · 21 March 2013 - 12:36
United States · AT&T U-verse

Going to say it's got to be a hacker, someone edited wikipedia to call TvTropes a former site within, by my count, SECONDS of the downage.

John F. Wozniak · 21 March 2013 - 12:33
United States · AT&T U-verse

It's doing the sparkpay thing, which is ridiculous, that's a Capital One owned site. Something is wrong here.

Robert Clarke · 21 March 2013 - 12:30
United States · Comcast Cable

Well, this is awkward. I'm getting the sparkpay crap too. Perhaps TVTropes got raided by the partyvan, who knows? Perhaps the content policy just wasn't enough...

Florian Hartmann · 21 March 2013 - 12:27
Germany · Kabel Deutschland

Well, that probably means no Tvtropes from now on... it was good while it lasted...

Michael N Kathy Salazar · 21 March 2013 - 12:20
United States · AT&T Internet Services

When I try to go on to Tvtropes it asks for a a username and password from Sparkpay or something like that.
