Can't Access US Social Security Administration - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

I tried to create an account for my mother. However, the SSA website couldn't find her despite that all information was 100% correct!
After 3 unsuccessful attempts the access was disabled. Next day I tried it again - same result. Why when I called SSA and provided the same information the rep was able to find my mother instantly?
I just spent 3 hours for the call. Nice job!
I saw (in the comments above) that other people had the same issues but SSA did nothing to fix it.
I pay taxes to maintain all these Government websites but the most of them don't work (remember Obama care?)

Excessively long hold times to speak to someone. Then they disconnect when it is finally my turn.
At the office, one interviewer says one thing then the next says the opposite. NOT HELPFUL. 800 number interviewers have proven to be useless, dissiminating incorrect directions and information. Constant letters of reduction of benefits, appeal to then be asked why I was there since there was no basis for the reduction only to be called back and told my checks would be reduced for years. If that confuses you, ur not alone. It does me too. Need a benefit letter. Told to get it online for their website to say to get it during normal business hours which for the past week have not exsisted since their system across the nation has been up and down.

Sporadic. Using Firefox got in early today, in the middle of creating account. Crash. After several tries, finally got in again and successfully created account. Then hit hot link to make an online application and got "server not found". Tried a few more times then waited until several hours later and couldn't even get to the home page. Once again, the Social Security website is down, It was working yesterday, June 3, 2014, but as of today, June 4, the SSA website has once again crashed. There's nothing wrong with my computer, because I'm able to access all other websites, just not the site for SSA. Why does this keep happening?

Crystal Strobel · 4 June 2014 - 21:21
United States · Bright House Networks · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

I have been trying to access the site for hours, but it keeps saying "Oops! Google Chrome could not find" -OR- "This webpage is not available". It works when I go to, but as soon as I click a link on the site (such as for the "My Social Security" account), it will try taking me to a URL that has in it, and that is the part that is not working. I'm not the only person who can't access it either. I've tried from other devices and I had a friend (that lives in another state) try as well, all with no success. So, no, regardless of what your site says, it is not up and running fine or down just for me. Try checking it the old fashioned way for us for once... type the URL in your browser and see what happens for you, and THEN you tell me if it's up or down. Thanks.

I had the same problem for months. Called SSA multiple times and visited a local office and they are all brain dead. I finally found a solution today without their help:

Go to the SSA Forgot Password page: and create a new password.

I am not sure, but I suspect that passwords expire after a period of time or if not used for a period of time. I had not logged in for over one year. Please provide feedback if this works for you.
