Can't Access US Social Security Administration - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

Once again: unable to log on to the Social Security website. I've used both Google Chrome and Firefox, but the SSA website is 100% unresponsive. It's always like this.

Sporadic. Using Firefox got in early today, in the middle of creating account. Crash. After several tries, finally got in again and successfully created account. Then hit hot link to make an online application and got "server not found". Tried a few more times then waited until several hours later and couldn't even get to the home page. Tried the hotlink in the email that confirmed I'd created an account. That got me to the home page, but any attempt to navigate to another portion of the site (including "sign in") kicks back "server not found".

Anything the government is involved or sponsoring is dysfunctional. People who work there are useless and not held accountable. Have you been in a DMV office or any government agency? The attitude of the staff and their lack of care is obvious.

Once again, the Social Security website is down, It was working yesterday, June 3, 2014, but as of today, June 4, the SSA website has once again crashed. There's nothing wrong with my computer, because I'm able to access all other websites, just not the site for SSA. Why does this keep happening?

Crystal Strobel · 4 June 2014 - 21:21
United States · Bright House Networks · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

I have been trying to access the site for hours, but it keeps saying "Oops! Google Chrome could not find" -OR- "This webpage is not available". It works when I go to, but as soon as I click a link on the site (such as for the "My Social Security" account), it will try taking me to a URL that has in it, and that is the part that is not working. I'm not the only person who can't access it either. I've tried from other devices and I had a friend (that lives in another state) try as well, all with no success. So, no, regardless of what your site says, it is not up and running fine or down just for me. Try checking it the old fashioned way for us for once... type the URL in your browser and see what happens for you, and THEN you tell me if it's up or down. Thanks.

I had the same problem for months. Called SSA multiple times and visited a local office and they are all brain dead. I finally found a solution today without their help:

Go to the SSA Forgot Password page: and create a new password.

I am not sure, but I suspect that passwords expire after a period of time or if not used for a period of time. I had not logged in for over one year. Please provide feedback if this works for you.

Thanks Robert Walters - your fix worked for me. Not only would it have been helpful for SSA to disclose the change in password shelf life, it would also be helpful to let us know that our password had expired instead of misleading message "website is down, try again during normal business hours" which gives no clue to the real reason you can't log in!

Robert Walters · 27 November 2013 - 07:53
United States · US Department of Defense Network

I read Geneva SF Cooper's suggestion but it won't work for me, my email address changed since I last logged in so no way to change my password. A real Catch 22. If our government was a business it wouldn't be.

Update : For all those who are getting the "try again during normal business hours" message after trying to log in:. SSA.GOV has changed password shelf life to 6 months. If it's been more than 6 months since you logged in you'll need to reset your password. If you've changed email addresses since you last logged in (like me) you'll have to call SSA to have them change your email address before they can send you a temp password. When I called it was going to be a 40 minute wait so I chose to get a call back. I only had to wait about 15 minutes for that.

It would have been nice for SSA to send us all emails letting us know of the password policy change but...
Good luck!

OK, I think I have a SOLUTION for many of you.

I have been trying for days to access My Social Security account and I keep getting the "This service is not available at this time. Please try again during our regular service hours." message even though I am trying during those hours.

I called two times, holding for hours. The first person was rude and said the site was fine.
The second person said it appeared that my SS# did not even have an online account. Both were useless.

So I tried to create a new account. Well guess what? The site says I already have an account.
Then I decided to check if my username and password were correct using the "forgot username: and "forgot password" links on the sign-in page.

BINGO! The "Forgot Password" option emails you a new/temp password and you can access your account with that.

THE SOLUTION: Reset your password.
THE REASON: It seems that SSA decided that all passwords on their website automatically expires after 6 months. And since many people visit the site once a year the odds are most of your passwords have expired, thus giving us that "service is not available" message. No where on their website does it say anything about expired passwords.

Once you access your account you will see, under your profile, a date when your new password expires.

Anyway, this worked for me. If it works for you please send me a quick note at FB.

It doesn't seem to be down, but it doesn't seem to work. If you're lucky you can get it do one or two things then you get a message telling you to come back during business hours (which it already is). I suspect it's totally overloaded and your session is full of timeouts. The design of the website is probably also bad with incorrect links in it.
