Can't Access Myfamily - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

This site is faulty.

MyFamily is two sites, the old and the new. The old is shut down but this site does not register it because it does not check the fork in the road which is all the front page is. Otherwise put isiddownrightnow.com is being fooled by a Potemkin village of a front page.

MyFamily1.0, the main site, is down and the new worthless one is up.

This site is displaying advertising often for Ancestry.com so has little incentive to improve its naïve evaluation of MyFamily a victim of the destroyer Ancestry.com.

The original site is closed and this site is fooled once more by the Potemkin village of a front page which remains open always.

Sadly it is still beyond the ken of this otherwise sophisticated web-site evaluator.

This message is misleadingly given when it is really sites of the form;
http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=site&htx=main

which are the ones needing access as Ancestry.com refused to provide these sites any download other than absolute garbage proving its irresponsibility to its oldest members.

Don, two possibilities would be you once did Ancestry.com which gave them a license forever or some member of your site took them to Ancestry.com which I had but they are public and I am bewildered doing that as I am ancestry.com public enemy no. 1 (and for me they are only in my top 50)

Otherwise they stole them it would seem and before I would say it absolutely I would llike to hear their explanation.

However that is why they closed our family tree section: to get thousands of names into their search engine. It was despicable but nothing like going beta and telling lies to achieve it but fail and strangling us for the last two years by jerking Notifications from us and then just quitting them.

They should be investigated on all levels of all states consumer's laws.

Here's another thing to get your blood pressure even higher!!! Out of curisiosity, i went to Ancestry and opened the members photo file and lo & behold, were pics that i posted only on My Family (I refuse to do so on Ancestry). They are so noted with a box with the names requested and shown only as a nondescript image and marked as those entered by members who wish to remain as private members. Ain't that a coincidence? Wonder how they will answer that one?

which is not what 1.0 guys would say was working. The other bad site seem to be working, but it is the 1.0 guys who need as Ancestry.com elected to stiff our download into one bunch of Photos with gibberish instead of their titles and the other get a good enough download maybe.

Spokt will offer a migration tool that currently works on News and Photos but will be extended to History which is the same structure as News so should be no problem and other sections as well.

Go see the discussion which knows more than I do at:

http://blog.spokt.com/general/myfamily-com-migration-tool/

for now it looks to be the best option of MF1.0ers

Update: The 1.0 path has been re-opened, maybe because they have a forward observer watching the posts here and running scared as Ancestry.com has lost permanently thousands or tens of thousand, or maybe hundreds of thousand of dollars of good will, already and more when their non-extended, breaking one more of their many broken promise, sept 5, 2014 passé probably with days when no one could get in and they would tell the exposed to be garbage lie that is was another DDos and not due to their misconduct as an American corporation. There should be big penalties for what is going on here to others, who are not as young as I am and are being tormented by these tactics.

Some lawyer should check to see if there has been a violation of some state's or the feds elder abuse laws.

I requestd Myfamily.com send a zip file as instructed.( They should have just sent zips to each member of every group.) Anyway, got my email with the zip file, and it would only create another zip file!! I called them, was told I had to use a different extraction program, (like my mac couldn't do this simple operation). When I told her I couldn't get in, the customer service rep said that I may be having trouble because I need to use another browser. I think she knew too well that the site was on its way down and that would keep me busy. Now the site has been down for almost a week, and the days are ticking by for me to get my data. Oh, by the way, I was told that the zip file only contains the photos. No video, no discussions, no documents. I am not renewing my Ancestry.com account because they can't be trusted to store my data.

Melinda after all they have done after buying the site, trying to force us into a poor version of 1.0 with repeated lies, taking our family trees (f we want to see them)into their Ancestry site, perverting Rootsweb and shrinking the database number for Ancestry.com benefit, and then turning Notifications off and on repeatedly and then off and always claiming that there was no one who could fix it, then fixing it a bit a month ago and then turning it off again,

I am not surprised that you got someone else's photos and maybe they got yours. No real problem so long as they were not labeled by Photoshop as the labels they are providing read like aadbvadfff;fjdfahpioebnv;sdioeuerbfa;lejoiu

Thanks Karen McPherson for the just prior post for what might be, potentially good news, but not if the extension is minimal and the sites have been further tampered with to add more blockades to getting to each page and copying it.

What they did the first week was harmful to the harvest of our decade plus of tens of thousands of posts per site.

There was no DDos as all who know all the site members of the named sites they terrorized into spending many hours last week working on downloading page by page. It was an intentional set of acts sending out these messages to tens of thousands of members of all the sites, that overloaded the beast's servers.

It was their perverted strategy to do them all at once and an intern or first year IT guy could have predicted the onslaught and the intentional result of a Dos not a DDos.caused by customers doing what could have been foreseeable acts.

Sadly it seems the consensus of 1.0 guys is to accept the scans with titles such as abdcslkjfaouenguthlfdauotubafdktufao and no other data from the official download, no text and so forth. As soon as my regular borrowed camera comes back from Europe with its owner I will continue this but start at one to the Governor of Utah, than one to the Five then one to someone in Utah, then one to Greta, ... every day, ...such as this with a hybrid of these two https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIq7HOOJtoQ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSViz7vkbCQ ...

I'm looking at http://www.myheritage.com and have imported a couple of GEDCOM files and 3 or 4 albums for testing. It does cost a bit for full features but has an optional feature that allows members to donate. The 2 and 5 year terms are considerably cheaper. Also allows multiple site managers and multiple trees. For me that will simplify tree maintenance. Originally thought the company was from Tel Aviv but must have researched another similar site that had that origin.

I opened a trouble ticket when the site was up asking about getting a zip file export of only photos. I am a version 1.0 site owner. No explanation of why 1.0 will only get photos. Their response:
"Dear Ed,

Thank you for contacting MyFamily.com in regard to downloaded files and your request for more information.

When you go to your download page, you will see a grid. The top section of the grid is for the 1.0 classic photos download. The
second section of the grid is for the new site 2.0 photos download. • The other files (no site name on them) are not linked to
active site and do not contain any files. Zipped file for 2.0 should contain: Photos, Videos, Files, Calendar items (ical format).
Zipped file for 1.0 should contain: Photos.

Any other files that you would like to save, would need to be copied and pasted to a word document. If you need assistance with how to do this please click the link provided: How to copy and paste information." Really?

It has become clear Ancestry.com has just turned off the MyFamily site while using all its servers for its other sites.

Will Ancestry.com provide enough time to download all we need? Only if we convince Ancestry.com there is a p.r. gigantic price to pay if they continue in bad faith against the good customers of MyFamily who expected MyFamily to improve with Ancestry.com purchase, not be stripped, be bludgeoned into 2.0 (which only I fought unreservedly against and I guess successfully), have its family trees be ended unless given to Ancestry.com at least as a private tree, indexed to increase their collection, and ended Notifications two years ago and one year ago completely strangling many of my site to death.

Stand up and be heard. We have nothing to fear in fighting back and everything to lose if we let the Wall Street corrupt new owners rob us of our patrimony.

These people are acting evil and we will see if they want to have that label from now until each of our deaths. I will from now on call them evil-Ancestry.com unless they relent and publish a letter to all of my members apologizing and assuring we csn get all our posts.

KinMapper always also known as Fight.the.corrupt

Down For: ~2 days 2 hours
Myfamily.com is unavailable.
The website is currently under maintenance... and

so which is it? I say it is shut tight as punishment to our misbehaving and not accepting the destruction of our patrimony. May God judge these LDSers who sold most of their shares to Satan.

I can't even get a good decent reply from MF. They could at least send me/us a copy of the site. They have even been offered to be paid for it. I think they took a lot of my info and ran with it. Well other peoples info also. I have had people here from Alaska, Californiam Hawaii, Nevada and several other states cemetery hunting. If anyone knows of a Law suit we can bring against them for not supplying our info please let me know. Tom barretttt52@yahoo.com. As an educated IT type, I suggest that Ancestry.com may be its own Denial culprit, intentionally by its acts, although the term of IT is an "unintentional denial of service"

Ancestry.com is now a mercenary site shutting MyFamily and other sites down and leaving the hundreds of thousands of members insufficient notice and time to get their assets thought to be permanent so long as the annual fee is paid.

This happens as Ancestry.com may be using its servers for multiple sites in order to reduce costs. Then when people show up (not likely for the last year and more as Ancestry.com had ended daily or post by post Notifications of the posts, a part of the purchase price and annual fee, claiming it was broke and Ancestry.com now the owner for nearly a decade, could find no one for many months who knew how to fix it--despicable liars) in normal or even larger numbers, the sites can not be serviced.

From Wikipedia:

"Unintentional denial of service[edit]

This describes a situation where a website ends up denied, not due to a deliberate attack by a single individual or group of individuals, but simply due to a sudden enormous spike in popularity. This can happen when an extremely popular website posts a prominent link to a second, less well-prepared site, for example, as part of a news story."

...or when hundreds of thousands of MyFamily members are UNEXPECTEDLY given only weeks to download tens of thousands of scans and of posts or lose them, as the customers' problems have no effect on Wall Street venture owners who seek to flip their $1.6 billion vehicle purchased from another such group.

They fixed many of the other sites by turning off MyFamily site users from even getting some of their "permanent" posts. We are still closed, Obscene and unethical but maybe legal and quite demonstrative of the evil forces you all are making rich.

Look at the seemingly poor programming of the Ancestry.com site which has made searching more difficult now than ten years before. Actually the programming is done to keep the sites and the seekers at a crawl, or so it seems ten years later. Then there is the junk genealogy Ancestry.com encourages to be created by its leaves and then there is...

I am also very disappointed in myfamily. I have download most of the data that I wanted, but names, addresses and e-mail addresses I hadn't had a chance to copy down. Now all of that is lost. I am a lawyer without a country, as I still have a fair number of Florida circuit, appellate and one audacious county judge who have committed criminal acts during Clinton (Reno of Miami and future AG Holder), Bush (all three were unwilling to prosecute crimes by judges) and Obama (Holder again a clear criminal). That being said Ancestry.com has inserted clauses saying you have foregone your right to a class action law suit for the privilege of dealing with the august genealogy hog/whale Ancestry.com or one of its subsidiaries.

As I reject the quiescent lawyers of America, who in massive lockstep emulate the three monkeys of Nikkō, who have allowed our country to be more lawless within a court of law than outside of one, I suggest that there is a possibility of major win and one of major loss. This is not legal advice, as I am not allowed to give any, anywhere, much less under corrupt Utah where Ancestry.com requires one on one actions to be filed. Utah is per se corrupt as they have allowed Ancestry.com to fool the U.S. public lawfully but in violation of standard consumer law expectations. Utah may change its course as Ancestry.com is a Wall Street type company and no longer so connected with LDS members. If not, Utah is as corrupt as "honest" lawyers who will not discuss crimes from the bench.

I have never entered explicitly into a contract with Ancestry.com for MyFamily services and also had refused to purchase anything from them. However many of you have and thus might be subject to the terms added when they bought MyFamily. It might work.

It might not work as first term contract law explains the concept of adhesion contract where there was a forced set of terms which shock the public conscience and are against public policy. See good old Wikipedia and learn that we have a fair chance under this theory:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adhesion_contract

However by then the databases may have been turned over to the IRS to lose using their now tested methods.

So do as I suggested here and call them. video tape the call and tell them first thing that you have been doing that while you have been on hold for umpteen minutes and talking to the few listeners that will click on the youtube of all the true and certain offenses Ancestry.com through MyFamily or other sites have committed on their customer. Hang up when it is clear they are not looking for more complaints from customers of subsidiary that they had already strangled and are inflicting the coup de grace over the next three months less ten days.

Post it with a fine title of truth as to Ancestry.com, not exaggeration, such as I did a year ago:

Expose Corrupt Genealogy Whale: Ancestry.com is not above board [part one of many]
at

I have 16 years of documentation, photos, research etc and 300+ members on the site that look to us for answers ~ we don't have any! We MUST be able to save this information somehow. Because their export data plan has failed terribly they are even blocking me from other ways to save our info. If there is a class action suit, I too am in! Anybody?

MyFamily is a shell now and for the last five and more years since Ancestry.com bought it and like other sites it has bought, proceeded to violate the implied contract between members and company. Do not even bother calling them. Call Ancestry.com and let them hear that your angst is getting permanent and their good will is getting to the level of sewage.

Only if Ancestry.com wakes up and begins to suspect that its gains by spitting on us will be greatly outweighed by our screams in agony that they have violated every tenet in every one of their commercials by destroying our sites before we can retrieve them. This applies to the original members at 1.0 as MyFamily elected to give the other sites all their information.

So shall we begin our screams, ever so softly to the poor customer service people and their managers and their managers' managers to make them aware how loud and pervasive they can be increased across the web and in our every day activities to warn all of the many genealogical non-criminal "crimes" against the users of the sites it has taken control of, by hook or crook or just purchase, as well as its duplicity in its originated sites.

Join me in calling Ancestry.com and speak sternly but softly, if you can.

I am trying to conduct a poll among my members (300+) re the future of our family site but it is either completely down or so tricky to get into, most have simply given up. I am now thinking we will never be able to retrieve our historical documents and photos. We've had very little service for the last 5 years and the notification glitch (none for several years and then I received over 200 in one day) and posting problems pretty much killed off enthusiasm for participating in the site. Couldn't MyFamily at least go dark gracefully?

I was personally devastated by the unexpected notification that myfamily.com was going out of business. It seems to me - after reading the above comments - that this could be the basis of a class action law-suit. If anyone knows how to pursue this, please count me in.

I have spent 15 years developing my website - which included research that would be impossible for me to replicate. I have begged for an extension of time and they simply refuse to be accommodating in any way. The very least they could do is extend the deadline for each day that the site has not been functioning properly.

Their lack of responsiveness is not new. I have been begging them - for 15 years - to stop sending Birthday Reminders for people who are DECEASED - which is identified right in the record. Yet they have never corrected this. Likewise to wish couples a Happy Anniversary when one of the people are DECEASED. Their lack of responsiveness to their customers has existed for as long as they have.

I firmly believe that this is the BEGINNING OF THE END FOR ANCESTRY.COM and all I can say is that it is rightly deserved.

This continuing failure of the sites will make saving the posts one by one as required by Ancestry.com which claims our original 1.0 MyFamily files are too old to supply them to us, like they did with their new customers (a falsehood beyond absurd and contemptible) and who is making tens of thousands of people potentially download tens of thousands of posts potentially from the thousands of MyFamily sites. Do the arithmetic for the traffic Ancestry.com has caused on all of its servers, or those serving MyFamily, by this treacherous deed of termination with no notice to many folks yet and so the onslaught will get worse. The majority of my members have not received notice yet best I can tell.

MyFamily.Com is down as of June 17th and a few days before this. As of Sept., 2014 MyFamily.com will be dropped. I called and asked what could be done. I was given an indirect answer.

Ancestry.com is treating us 1.0 users like dirt. I have called the CEO, Tim Sullivan and been shuffled off to assistants who pretend to care about the shoddy service we are receiving but do nothing about it. It is a travesty in the way they are treating its loyal customers as they prepare to shut us down on 9/15/14...

My Myfamily.com group page is unreachable this morning--I've tried multiple times and multiple ways to open it. It's also kicked me out of my signed-in status, which had lasted the last few weeks, which I discovered when I went to the home page and had to sign in. Not having enough caffeine this morning to remember my password, I thought "Oh, I'll just have them send my sign-in info to my email." Nope. That gets an error message too, and no email was sent.

I have had my site since 1998, when they were free and started subscribing to the paid version when that was required. About once a month, I encounter this "site can't not be found" error message. The site has about 400 members and over 3000 pages of content. I don't know why this continues to happen, you'd think by now they'd know what is happening and would be able to fix the problem a lot faster.

1.0 Site is not up and running. Server error message since 5 AM central. Yesterday it was the disappearing image issue that took all day to deal with. Today begins waiting for the team to arrive and work through server issues. All the while, it is true the 2.0 site is functional... ::sigh:::

Test of login page contraindicates existence of problem replicated by many version 1.0 site members this morning. myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=site&htx=main points to http://blog.myfamily.com/buildy.html, which results in a "Not Found" error message for Apace/2.2.22 Server at blog.myfamily.com Port 80. Where to begin. First of all, support is no help whatsoever.

Problem - our domain has disappeared and with more than 5, 000 worldwide members on our site no one can access. And trying to use the old way, using version 1, we just get a blank page.

We paid for our domain, and myfamily is supposed to keep it current. Well, it expired, and we have a site with 500 private photo albums, almost 100, 000 photos and we are getting no help, although it is myfamily's fault.

The site is the World of Woodturners, the largest site you have, and you have gotten hundreds of new users from among our people. We have had a site since 2001 and this is even more frustrating than the dozens of times the site goes down.

Any comments - my family?

Sherry... we are up and running for now. Cross your fingers. As a side note, the mountain in the background of your photo looks amazingly like Carbonate Mt. If not it is a haunting likeness. I spent hundreds of hours climbing it in the days of my youth.

Back up and running. If your people still have problems, they will need to clear their browser cache. If they STILL have problems, they can call 1-888-265-7491. About a 15 minute wait on Monday at 1PM

At 1 PM Eastern time, 2 hours after the myfamily.com technical support team returned to work from the weekend, there is finally a message on the customer support number which acknowledges that they are having problem with their site and are working to address the issue as quickly as possible. If you want to speak to a representative, there is a very long wait to do so. After a substantial hold time, I hung up - not knowing whether they had 1, 2 or 3 people in the back office -- concluding it was more important for them to be able to repair the problem than to listen to me vent. If any of you DO speak with LHB, please update the rest of us, thanks. And no, our site has not regained it's functionality.

We use MyFamily 1.0 and again are having the issue of not being able to post. Extremely frustrating. Customer service stands by their claim 'it must be MY server' causing problems. Even though everyone in my family is using different servers. Anyone on here found a similiar site that doesn't have all the issues?

Dave Inchausti · 22 September 2013 - 22:12
United States · AT&T U-verse

I think you are correct in your assessment, Sherry, and it would be interesting to know how many 1.0 sites still exist. I remember that a significant number of us refused to migrate but I'm betting that the attrition caused by Facebook and the other social website alternatives has significantly reduced our numbers . I wish I knew the strategic intentions of the powers to be relative to how they intend to attrit us and how accomodating they will be to allow us recapture our monstrous data bases as part of a strategy to drive us away. My largest site has 6 gigs and 12 years of accumulated data residing on their servers and thousands of pages of news commentary. Frightening prospects...

Sherry Chilton · 22 September 2013 - 15:54
United States · Verizon Wireless

Dave, as best I can tell it is only effecting the 1.0 site. I had migrated over content to the new site way back and intended to go with it, until I realized that anyone on the newer site could migrate everything from the site to ancestry.com with the click of a button and what was once private, would be immediately public. I contacted customer support about that particular feature, basically requesting the equivalent of a kill switch that would prevent it, as some of the family discussions on the private site have absolutely no business being placed in public, searchable databases. It was taken under advisement and rejected, so we stayed with 1.0. However, I just tested the old "new site", and it is operating like a charm. I can post anything, change cover pages, etc. So, I would think they are doing all they can not do to retain the 1.0 sites. We very simply do not fit into the business model because we are taking up server storage space and they can't charge others to access the data. IMHO. We'll find out hopefully tomorrow. Also, it would be interesting to learn how many of "us" there are. Imagine we are a small, dying breed, which makes the need to identify an alternative way service provider an imperative.

Can someone recommend a good site for me to transfer my data to since they sure don't seem to be doing their job. I contacted the Ancestry customer support people and got only a myfamily tel # which informs callers that normal hours are bla bla bla ... I told the Ancestry person that I was stunned that the myfamily people would leave us all for a weekend with this major system problem and no communications vehicle to get updates and an indication that someone there really cared and were working on a fix. I almost feel that neither the sub nor the parent seem to care about customer service anymore and wish we would go away. Does anyone who is commenting on this thread represent the later versions of myfamily or are we all 1.0 users?

As they are an ancestry subsidiary, has anyone contacted ancestry.com's - 1-800-262-3787 Customer Solutions Associates? They are available 7 days a week, 9 am to 11 pm ET. The difference in customer service and tech support is pretty telling in itself in terms of differential investments, and where they intend to migrate everything -- to fullbore public social media, online trees and DNA database development. Does anyone else offer a platform for these private sites like 1.0?

Sherry Chilton · 21 September 2013 - 11:16
United States · Verizon Wireless

As many of you have probably done as well, I called technical support this morning. There is no outage recording, only the recording to call back during normal business hours, which is 11 AM Monday EASTERN time. I have emailed my people letting them know of the outage and wishing them all a good weekend. I also have emailed technical support suggesting that when they are having issues like this, it would be appreciated if they emailed the administrators. Way back, they used to do this so that we were aware of issues and able to inform our own people. Did ANYONE call them yesterday during business hours? I emailed them yesterday, but have not received even a confirmation of receipt of that communication. One question I do have... is this problem limited to the 1.0 platform or is it effecting the newer platform as well? Thanks, and sorry for all your frustrations too.

This is indeed a frightening trend and the responses that no backup is available for our data is a daunting thought. I can't believe that they would be allowed to treat this large customer base in this manner. There must be some consumer protection available to us

Folks, this is Ancestry.com - the same organization that took our posted family trees and is now getting paid for the information that we took so long and so much effort to accumulate. What do we expect even tho we are paying them to maintain our sites. Have you checked the source pages? No improvements. Well, maybe the Colorado floods inundated their servers.

Problem with myfamily.com since midnight September 19, 2013. Server is accessible but no ability to input comments, change cover photo, front page, upload photos etc. A full 30 hours has lapsed with viewing and navigation operability only. It is operating as a database only. I agree with previous commenters regarding service deterioration. We have already lost photos and been told they are not replaceable. Tough to copy 12GB ourselves and we feel very much at risk when we can't even change a front page photo in 30 hours!
