Can't Access FanFiction - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as m.fanfiction.net

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

I haven't been able to log into fan fiction since yesterday. I've tried deleting my cookies and history and still can't log in at all on my gmail account. Whenever I try signing in, with gmail it says: "Unable to Process Authentication

It seems Code G1 is for Google users and F1 is for Facebook users. I have tried both, and neither can log in. This has been going on for about a day now.

and THIS is why I save the stories I like chapter-by-chapter on my HD. Because it's like that cheating boyfriend that, for some dumb-butt reason you keep letting back into your life, knowing exactly what they're going to do the moment you turn away. I swear, if I didn't like so many authors who stick to FFN.net or the stories I find there that intrigue me, I'd be a regular at the other major FFN sites. I mean, who enjoys being part of a site that limits creativity, deletes your hard work on their own whims with nary a warning, and allows rampant bullying through reviews and PMs or even in stories themselves!!

I found a 'story' link on FFN.net that was basically this person degrading another author on the site and telling them how bad they are and stupid and all these other cruel things! FFN.net will delete your story if it's in script format like a movie script, but they haven't deleted this damn thing yet?! Xing, or whoever you're @#^$! for to let them have their way with the site and servers, you need to get your act together!

Mariah Ross · 11 August 2014 - 20:21

if you just sit there and hit the refresh button repeatedly for a good ten or twenty minutes you can get the site back up but as soon as you go onto the next chapter it goes back down

FF.net?
Please, I know you're in there, People are asking where you've been. They say "have courage", and I'm trying to I'm right out here for you, just let me read. We only have each other. It's just you and me. What are we gonna do?
Do you wanna read a fanfic? Yeah?

Well, me too. But I bloody well can't. 4am is meant for reading. What else am I supposed to do? Sleep? Now who's talking crazy!

The reason this site says it's up when it's not is because they're just checking the login page, which is still working, trying to access fanfiction's main page through the link on the login page comes up with a 503 error.

If your having issues with firefox, then open a new tab and type in the address bar, about:config and click "I'll be careful, I promise!" and search for network.dns.disableIPV6 and double click it and it should change to true, it fixed it for me.

Well, this f******g s***s. I was check to see what stories I have under favorites have been updated, then i get the message "This Website is Not Available." What kind of bulls**t is that. This isn't even the first time it has happened to me, or the first site it has happened to. If the creators and admins of FanFiction.net cannot keep their site running 24/7, then I say they need to hire some people who have years of experience in the field of website design, networking, and software maintenance to help them with this very obvious malfunction that they overlooked when creating the site.

Now, unfortunately, it has been about an hour since this happened to me, and I am very pissed. The admins are also not even giving us a timeframe for when the site should be back up & running like have in the past, which does not sit well with me. Especially since I am very serious when it comes to timeframes.

Now, I'll admit I have a problem when it comes to fanfiction of different shows and/or movies, but this is one problem I don't intend to fix anytime soon.

So, I say this to any & all FanFiction.net admins and creators reading these comments, take my advice and hire people that actually know what they are doing in terms of networking and software. I don't mean to criticize you about your work on the site, but this is just ridiculous that it happens at least once a month almost.

Sincerely,

Brandon Butler (aka Bringer_of_Despair)

@Helen, I wouldn't call it rage, if you look through most of the comments, many are just expressing their agony and others are being funny, we are trying to cheer each other basically- letting others know they aren't alone. There is actually an addiction called online escapism which I can imagine most of us are experiencing right now, including me unfortunately. Real life just sucks too much.

@Carole, no one's having a /real/ go at the staff, sweetie. We understand they're probably working very hard to get the site up and running again. As I said early, the extra fail-safe they added probably caused some problems. Also as I said earlier, it's very clear that most people are joking, and the staff's probably having a laugh right now and cheering that it's so popular people are complaining that it's down.

So Fanfiction is down today. So I decided to leave my house and it turns out Earth is really interesting. Maybe I'll check it out in my next life time.

It says Fanfiction.net is having problems... I think it blew up... or someone fell asleep, and accidentally unplugged the server. And being asleep... all the while, the FF world is freaking out.

My comment is called honesty, from my perspective, I would rather be honest then have a go at the staff who work all day every day just so we can post our stories. All I said is that people are getting a bit silly, yes no one likes the sight being down, but saying let's rage is just childish.

Reading the comments can be entertaining while waiting for Fanfiction. I'm just going to watch SkipBeat! or something now. No point on waiting when this can take forever. There's always tomorrow.

@Carole, you know, you should be the one to grow up. Most people are joking, and it's pretty clear they are. Other's are just a bit upset that they were in the middle of updating/reading when it went down. If you don't like it, DON'T READ THESE COMMENTS || @Everyone Else, at least we can all get to updating our own stuff now, right? ^.^

@Helen Carole Miller:
If its not a big deal to you then get off the line, other people do care so if you dont have anything to say then sod off.

@Helen you've said that twice. We get it, you don't care. I am sure the staff would be ecstatic that this is the reaction they get. Hundreds of people moaning about how they miss it and what not. It means it is popular.

@ carol actually, I think the staff would be laughing their asses off at most of the comments on here... I know I am. and if fanfiction being down doesn't matter, why are you checking the status of it?

Is it weird that it always freaks me out when I find out that there are other people especially guys who are reading FF.net? I just get this crazy urge over methat I should scream something like "WTF!! NO! IT'S MINE!!!! MY PRECIOUS!! MINE!" Huh. So weird.

People need to grow up, just because fanfiction is down, does not mean that the world is going to end. The staff are likely working their asses off to get the site back up, and if you worked there, and saw these comments, you would not be very happy. So calm down.

I look out my window to see that I am not alone in this crisis. Others are venturing from their homes. Bleary eyed and squinting at the sun. Keep hope, we will remain strong. Though I fear cannibalism may start soon.

@ Carol you are in the wrong place to say those things, we are all here because Fanfics are quite important and we're suffering, if you are not suffering, leave us to suffer and complain, it is what we do best when we cannot read.

Didn't fanfiction say that they were adding another fail-safe? You know, to keep this from happening? And yet, here we are.

Wouldn't it be lovely if they would at least let us know what's actually going wrong? Or even let us know that they are actually WORKING on it?

So glad I use archiveofouown just as often as fanfic.net
It has this handy button: 'entire story' so you don't have to load chapter by chapter which helps when websites go down.
