Can't Access FanFiction - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as m.fanfiction.net

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

The Five Stages of Fanfiction Grief:
1) Denial: Oh, it must be my Internet access, refreshing the page ought to fix it.
2) Anger: COME ON I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A GREAT STORY! WORK, DAMN YOU!
3) Bargaining: Please work? It was my last story for the day...okay, I was only going to read a few more. I'll be productive right after that, I promise.
4) Depression: *sobs* *thinks of all the canon-dead characters who were alive in that fanfic* *sobs harder*
5) Acceptance: HA JUST KIDDING *continues sobbing and refreshing the page*

Its not just you, its Firefox stopping you. They're changing their certificate. You can either change to another browser. Or, type "about:config" into firefoxs address, go to "security.ssl.enable_ocsp_stapling" and toggle it. That'll turn off the feature thats stopping you going to the website.

Well, this f******g s***s. I was check to see what stories I have under favorites have been updated, then i get the message "This Website is Not Available." What kind of bulls**t is that. This isn't even the first time it has happened to me, or the first site it has happened to. If the creators and admins of FanFiction.net cannot keep their site running 24/7, then I say they need to hire some people who have years of experience in the field of website design, networking, and software maintenance to help them with this very obvious malfunction that they overlooked when creating the site.

Now, unfortunately, it has been about an hour since this happened to me, and I am very pissed. The admins are also not even giving us a timeframe for when the site should be back up & running like have in the past, which does not sit well with me. Especially since I am very serious when it comes to timeframes.

Now, I'll admit I have a problem when it comes to fanfiction of different shows and/or movies, but this is one problem I don't intend to fix anytime soon.

So, I say this to any & all FanFiction.net admins and creators reading these comments, take my advice and hire people that actually know what they are doing in terms of networking and software. I don't mean to criticize you about your work on the site, but this is just ridiculous that it happens at least once a month almost.

Sincerely,

Brandon Butler (aka Bringer_of_Despair)
