Can't Access FanFiction - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as m.fanfiction.net

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

I can get *on* but my PM system with the person I usually correspond with...messages won't show up and a stray message from someone else *to* someone else also showed up on those pages as well. Our PM replies go to email, but won't show up on the website.

Laura Resendiz · 1 day 21 hours 18 mins ago

i cant get in, it says something about SSL and there is a picture of a lock. i am not a happy camper right now.

Mike Ebersol · 1 day 21 hours 55 mins ago

I can't access FanFiction.net now... it's been about six hours. I keep getting a message that their is a problem "with this website's security certificate."

Megan Bailey · 1 day 23 hours 25 mins ago

Having a spot of trouble right now, anyone else?

Catie Counihan · 2 days 48 mins ago

I would totally not usually do this but you guys have been such an incredible support system over the years. I absolutely love this show Star Crossed and am terrified it is going to get canceled! I would so appreciate if y'all would watch it. It is on tonight on the CW at 8/7c. There is an incredible fanfic out right now as well called Break Forth to New Mutiny. Read it/Watch it/Support it. Love you guys! THANKS SO MUCH!

Michael Burns · 2 days 20 hours 15 mins ago

Been trying for the last week to use xbox live to get on it since my computer sucks. Always says that the website might be down or not connected to the internet yet I can go play multiplayer halo right after that or go to my computer and read fanfiction there. Anyone else got this problem?

Abigail Wells · 2 days 21 hours 26 mins ago

Wasn't working on IE or Chrome, so I downloaded FireFox went to Tools> Options> Advanced> Certificates> Validation and uncheck both boxes. Click ok and now it works.

Sue Draycott · 3 days 5 hours 56 mins ago

I can't access the site at all, im using Google Chrome, and it just states about the SSL certificate, have tried IE but this won't let me connect at all. Not good :(

Bebe Greene · 3 days 16 hours 10 mins ago

I can't access the site on my phone it says certificate expired and unable to secure connection and i don't know how to change the browser on my phone

Joseph Logeot · 3 days 19 hours 7 mins ago

I can't get on, it says Security Error. Invalid Server Certificate. I just can't get on.

Nugroho C. Sampurno · 11 April 2014 - 05:17

i can access by phone but not with pc, and yesterday i can access with pc, wth is wrong with ffn?

Prima Denise Jarder · 10 April 2014 - 19:05

try to use MAXTHON, it's might suggesting "don't open" or "go take the risk"; they're gonna tell u that the certificate is expired anyway and since i click the other one, that the only thing can opened fanfiction atm,

Shontel Redfield · 10 April 2014 - 14:28

It says it's up but when i go it it says internet explorer cannot display the webpage but i can go to other sites so what do i do.

William Andrew Jordan · 10 April 2014 - 10:02

WTF. wanted to post a new chapter but phone, xbox360 and library coputers say site is down. but this site and others like it say it is up just not for me.

Farheen Mohsin · 10 April 2014 - 06:21

ahh why it is giving SSL error on every browser I use.and some bull about security issue.

David Blades · 10 April 2014 - 06:09

i got this Cannot connect to the real www.fanfiction.net

Something is currently interfering with your secure connection to www.fanfiction.net.

Try to reload this page in a few minutes or after switching to a new network. If you have recently connected to a new Wi-Fi network, finish logging in before reloading.

If you were to visit www.fanfiction.net right now, you might share private information with an attacker. To protect your privacy, Chrome will not load the page until it can establish a secure connection to the real www.fanfiction.net.

Robert Sharpe · 10 April 2014 - 04:06

I've tried using IE as well as Chrome, but it isn't working at all

Chase Manaena · 9 April 2014 - 18:55

mine keeps saying cannot connect to the real fanfiction what is going on

Sarah DeBaar · 9 April 2014 - 13:05

here's the response I received from firefox ...

"hello, i can certainly replicate this issue. my guess is that the site is currently implementing measures against the recently published widespread vulnerability that allows webservers with a certain version of openssl running on them to be exploited (heartbleed.com) & is switching their certificate.

an advanced security feature in firefox is picking up this change as the site doesn't seem to be fully updated for this new certificate yet. you can temporarily work around the issue:

enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named security.ssl.enable_ocsp_stapling. double-click it and change its value to false. it is important however, that after a bit of time when the issue gets resolved by the site (maybe try again in 24 hours), you go back and switch the setting to "true" again!"

Michael Scott Parker · 9 April 2014 - 13:03

i bet we all got Error code: sec_error_ocsp_unknown_cert but for some reason it was working on IE (HATE that browser) and now on Firefox its working again. And yes I have both of those OCSP boxes checked before refreshing that page. Was getting mad too cause was reading a VERY good X-over called "Last Son" between superman and Xmen Evolutions

Jennifer Billing · 9 April 2014 - 12:48

I couldnt get FF to work on firefox but it's fine in IE.

Karlos Morgan Železný · 9 April 2014 - 12:47

Well, for me chrome is working, but opera not

Olaf Rammler · 9 April 2014 - 12:35

just accept it. they busted their OCSP-Server completely.

I fear as long as they don't update their OpenSSL (If they are using it) there will be no fanfiction.net

There is a HUGE "heart bleed"-Glitch in the current version, so there was an update yesterday.

Joseph Estes · 9 April 2014 - 12:33

Funny enough that fanfiction is working on safari, the app that I never use for fanfiction and its working for it more than firefox. So I think that its a firefox issue.

Alex Myos · 9 April 2014 - 12:31

also getting the impression that it's a firefox issue, but maybe emailing FFN will get things moving faster. (not that they ever respond to bug emails, ever... but hey, can't hurt to try something else?)

changing the certificate settings, or updating/reinstalling firefox didn't work for me, either.

Olaf Rammler · 9 April 2014 - 12:27

i think thanks to the openssl-glitch which was found yesterday that have been forced to shut down their certification-server (maybe by hackers).

Breanna Mulligan · 9 April 2014 - 12:22

Nothing's working for it. I've tried firefox, chrome, and internet explorer

Tori Tullis · 9 April 2014 - 12:22

I just downloaded Chrome and it's saying it can't connect to the real Fanfiction.net... ugh.. .Hopefully this doesn't have anything to do with the Mircosoft ending support for Windows XP thing

Carl Taylor · 9 April 2014 - 12:19

I was having issues myself, Until I tried IE browser. That fixed all my problems I hope it helps you guys out.

Olaf Rammler · 9 April 2014 - 12:14

They seem to have busted their Certification-Servers *GRMBL*

Savannah Blanche Thompson · 9 April 2014 - 12:10

Ironically, Firefox is the only place the site is working for me. both Chrome and IE are giving me the security error.

Saint-Rachel Scarbrough · 9 April 2014 - 12:08

The site isn't working on firefox. It is fine with chrome.

Lucy Chanthavisouk · 9 April 2014 - 12:06

Can't access due to internal communications error with Opera 12.16, Firefox OCSP server has no status for the certificate. (Error code: sec_error_ocsp_unknown_cert) works fine on chrome, hope they fix this

Meryl Rubin · 9 April 2014 - 12:04

Found a work around! Tools> Options> Advanced> Certificates> Validation and uncheck both boxes. Click ok. Back on!

Anmol Naaz · 9 April 2014 - 12:02

What is going on, I was going to update a chapter on my story and it is not working. (Cries in a dark corner)

Josh Clancy · 9 April 2014 - 12:01

Just check and I think it is actually Firefox that isn't working.

Lode Schonkeren · 9 April 2014 - 11:58

Just like everyone else... Secure connection failed. Deleting cert8 doesn't help, and the problem is that it is firefox that has the error, so all we can do is wait and moan.

Sarah Johanesen · 9 April 2014 - 11:57

Having the same problem on Firefox with the Untrusted Connection BS on fanfic.net - last thing I updated was Flash, and I think it auto-installed something from McAfee without my permission - could this be what's causing the problem? Tried deleting cert8 - it didn't work. Please don't make me go back to IE Firefox. Stop being cocks and get your act together - you don't want rabid fangirls and fanboys knocking down your door.

Kwon Jiyong · 9 April 2014 - 11:53

Site works on Chrome and Internet Explorer, so I think it's firefox's fault.

Deleting CERT8 file several times didn't help. Got a

"Secure Connection Failed. An error occurred during a connection to www.fanfiction.net. Invalid OCSP signing certificate in OCSP response. (Error code: sec_error_ocsp_invalid_signing_cert)

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command found in the help menu to report this broken site." message instead.

Sophie Errington · 9 April 2014 - 11:52

Guys i don't know if this will help, but i think it's a firefox issue, i changed server to google chrome, (not my favourite) and fanfiction.net is working there.

Dayle Irving · 9 April 2014 - 11:49

i can access the site via internet explorer but that net program is super slow on my comp and its a new comp.. so pretty much this is firefox problem. support@fanfiction.com is teh email for ffnet you need to report the firefox problem

Tori Tullis · 9 April 2014 - 11:47

Is it possible it has to do with that SOPA crap from the government?

Marshall Margaritell · 9 April 2014 - 11:44

yeah... ssl error my backside.. I'll go read on archiveofourown for a bit

Momotaz Islam · 9 April 2014 - 11:43

Yayy!! Thank you - Matěj Zednický: "Delete file "cert8.db" in your firefox profile while firefox is CLOSED. This fixed it for me. It is firefox problem, not ff.net so please be nice on moderators."

Guys This worked for me, I went to my Firefox Profile: This is mine since using my guest account: C:\Users\Guest\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\w4ji8w0z.default.

Find Cert8, delete that and now fanfiction.net is working for me.

Jess Struthers · 9 April 2014 - 11:41

An error occurred during a connection to www.fanfiction.net. The OCSP server has no status for the certificate. (Error code: sec_error_ocsp_unknown_cert)

this is all i get if i try and get on fanfiction HELP

Angela McGee · 9 April 2014 - 11:39

It's saying an untrusted connection on Firefox, like really? I've never EVER had this problem before. They better get this fixed or else my friend will call me aggravated ;-; Plus, I have a fanfic to read and those little f#!kasses can't screw up my schedule.

Matěj Zednický · 9 April 2014 - 11:36

Delete file "cert8.db" in your firefox profile while firefox is CLOSED. This fixed it for me. It is firefox problem, not ff.net so please be nice on moderators.

Rick Brackett · 9 April 2014 - 11:35

Nah, it's got nothing to do with XP. This has to do with the website's security, and the rules that govern it. It's something that they messed up on their part, so you're good to go.

Meryl Rubin · 9 April 2014 - 11:34

Untrusted connection as well. Using Firefox and Vista. Same thing on Ipad as well.

Sarah DeBaar · 9 April 2014 - 11:33

"www.fanfiction.net uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided. (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)" GAAAH! WHY!!

Jonathan J. Eldred · 9 April 2014 - 11:33

was able to get on with chrome and internet explorer but not firefox >.>

Tori Tullis · 9 April 2014 - 11:31

Is this happening to people who use Windows XP? Cause Mircosoft said they would stop security updates for that is that the problem

Jillian Robinson · 9 April 2014 - 11:30

I'm getting the Untrusted bullshit as well. WTF! I was about to upload a chapter!

Prasanth Venu · 9 April 2014 - 11:26

Try using chrome. It's working for me...

Derek Fung · 9 April 2014 - 11:25

could not establish a secure connection to the server. Way to f#!k up, stupid moderators.

Anna Jessica Smart · 9 April 2014 - 11:24

How do we fix this, whats going on?

You have asked Firefox to connect securely to www.fanfiction.net, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

Rick Brackett · 9 April 2014 - 11:22

Same here, untrusted connection. Love the fact that there's no 'I don't care' button, but there's a 'get me outta here' button -_-

Aarontest Hunger · 9 April 2014 - 11:17

getting an untrusted connection error for some reason anyone else?

Sakura Rose · 9 April 2014 - 11:16

This Connection is Untrusted

You have asked Firefox to connect securely to www.fanfiction.net, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure. Normally, when you try to connect securely, sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.

What Should I Do?
If you usually connect to this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

www.fanfiction.net uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not

Laveyan Furries · 9 April 2014 - 11:14

Is it just me, or can you not update stories?

Zachary Cobb · 9 April 2014 - 10:28

fanfiction is down for me again, same connection failure

Trisha Santiago · 29 March 2014 - 03:52

You know that when you click your username on the upper right corner, you'll be able to update your story and edit things.

This time, I can't! My username doesn't appear on the right corner and if I turn to mobile mode, I still can't update my story. How do you fix this?!

MJ Wright · 24 March 2014 - 18:33

Just a tip that seemed to get fanfic to work for me (knock on wood), I did a full reset of my nook - "Erase and deregister device". And now fanfic is up for me!!!

Amy Sasser · 22 March 2014 - 17:09

get message that the connection timed out, no problems reaching any other websites. :-(

Kara Hann · 19 March 2014 - 18:57

it's been a whole week without fan fiction. super annoyed.

KuroiDai Chan · 19 March 2014 - 00:02

1 week and i still can't acces fanfiction

Monica Arthurton · 18 March 2014 - 09:25

It works on my phone just not on my laptop and tablet

Kara Hann · 16 March 2014 - 09:48

day 4 still no sign of fan fiction. i feel like I'm going through withdrawals. how am i the only one still having issues!

Christopher Scott · 15 March 2014 - 00:42

its back up for me, here is an update from ff
http://blog.fictionpress.com/2014/03/15/service-update/

Megan Tilton · 15 March 2014 - 00:38

This totally sucks. But until fanfiction.net comes back up, maybe we could work on saving it for awhile? https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/stop-sopa-2014/q0Vkk0Zr

Cassie Teina Tawhai · 15 March 2014 - 00:33

Its not working on my computer, my phone or my table. Argh I love reading it so I just want them to hurry up and fix it.

Uzair Durrani · 15 March 2014 - 00:29

"503 Service Unavailable. No server is available to handle this request."

So, did all the servers get stolen or something?

Corey Semmler · 15 March 2014 - 00:27

When Fanfiction.net stopped allowing copy/paste it ruined be able to save stories to read offline. Now this constant on/off servers? If it hasn't got such a good selection of stories to read, I would've stopped going onto FF. T_T

Felicity Schoeppel · 15 March 2014 - 00:25

sorry, the servers are not available. the 'this is prob just you' is so wrong on so many levels. error messages all over.

Catie Counihan · 15 March 2014 - 00:01

Definitely remember to send the petition out to everyone! It has been actually picking up a lot of steam this week. :) Almost half way there but we only have a few more days people!

Amber Greer · 14 March 2014 - 23:52

fix the site now. I have been trying to get on for the past two hours, and I can't get on. I was reading degrassi, and now I can't. fix the site now. get off your lazy ass and fix the site. lots of people are having problems, and we can't get on the site because you are not fixing the site. fix the site now asap. fix it now!!

Alex William Painter · 14 March 2014 - 23:49

I'm trying to read a good Supernatural Mortal Instruments crossover every other story works fine but when it is those two stories I get "Request Timed Out"

Amber Greer · 14 March 2014 - 23:47

an hour ago, I kept getting the same message saying an 408 request timeout and I can't get on the site. I tried a second ago, and it still says the same thing. please fix it now. Lots of people are complaining, because we can not get on the site and read. fix it now asap please!

Annie Gao · 14 March 2014 - 23:15

Yes...I'm getting 503 message as well. I think it's been doing that for me every night at 11 pm, or somewhere around that. And I've been able to access it before that time plenty easily too! I live in AZ, btw. And ew, there's a bug sticking to my computer screen.

I thought it was maybe my parents turning off the internet, but then... why would I be able to access other pages...?

Hayley Toney · 14 March 2014 - 23:10

I can't get into the main page.. but yet my account works. They just fixed the other one FictionPress. And now FF.net is messed up.

Kerri Winston · 14 March 2014 - 23:07

I have been waiting approximately 1 hour for fanfiction to be fixed. Please fix it now. I can already start feeling withdraws.

Patricia Townsend-King · 14 March 2014 - 23:04

I am in Southern California, the site works but chapter navigation does not. I keeps saying the connection timed out. All I want to do is go to the next chapter of the story I'm reading.

Hayley Toney · 14 March 2014 - 22:58

See? I freaked out to. They banned it after everyone stood up against it in 2012. This got started when the old head person is running for something.

Kristi Heim · 14 March 2014 - 22:57

im so pissed off right now i think they need to resolve this server problem once and for all so it doesnt overload and crash

Amber Greer · 14 March 2014 - 22:54

the request timeout page keeps coming up everytime I pull up fanfiction.net. I have been trying to pull it up for over 30 minutes now. what ever the problem is, fix it now. people are trying to read, and we can't read it cause of whatever problem is happening. please fix it now asap!!

Kate Hudson · 14 March 2014 - 22:53

I hope you are right Hayley Toney. I believe you on the down time, but are we sure on SOPA for sure? I don't want to risk it though. According to this article from whitehouse.gov, http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/01/14/obama-administration-responds-we-people-petitions-sopa-and-online-piracy, it may be a real issue.

Hayley Toney · 14 March 2014 - 22:44

No this ISN'T apart of SOPA! I have found out that it was fake.. There was no news on it.. Everybody says it's fake. FanFiction is just having downtime.

Kristi Heim · 14 March 2014 - 22:38

yep thats what i get, i get to the main page and it stops. Been awhile since it crashed now its crashed again, damn it fix it right now!!!

Kate Hudson · 14 March 2014 - 22:33

Wonder if it is part of the protesting for SOPA 2014. If it passes, fanfiction will be shut down for good and current stories erased. You can sign the petition against it at https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/stop-sopa-2014/q0Vkk0Zr
It needs 100, 000 signatures by this Wednesday. It's at 47, 000.

Leanna Pizer · 14 March 2014 - 22:31

For me, it just won't load, It won't even give me the dignity of a time out or cannot load page, it just stops and stays on the previous page no matter how much I click...

Amber Greer · 14 March 2014 - 22:31

it keeps saying the 503 service unavailable message everytime I pull up fanfiction.net. fix it now. this should not be happening constantly. fix it now.

Kristi Heim · 14 March 2014 - 22:30

ok im pissed i was in the middle of reading a story and the site crashed. I think too many people are on it at once and it can't take it so it crashes

Amber Greer · 14 March 2014 - 22:18

I am trying to degrassi and pull up fanfiction.net, however neither are working! fix it now! this should not be happening. on this site, it says fanfiction is up and running, however I can not get on it! fix it now!
