Can't Access FanFiction - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as m.fanfiction.net

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

You still can't tell if a story is complete. Then when you try to go to the next chapter you get a 503 no server available then you reload it and there the chapter that you want to read is up instead of a 503.

On my phone, the usual "symbols" for completed story, symbols next to the anime/books/cartoons on the home page are replaced by a question mark...you can't even tell if a fanfiction is completed or not.

Again, I can post new chapters you just have to do the work around. I just posted one. Document Manager Submit is down for me still but if you have another document in there, you can just edit it and paste your new chapter into it and save it. To post, just title your new chapter and select the one you just edited as the source. If you don't have any documents in there, then go to your story and edit it and click on any chapter and check the box export and it will upload a chapter to your document manager.

It's kind of up, and kind of down which is why I think it's saying up on this website right now. You can read stories as long as you don't mind waiting and refreshing when your screen time's out between chapters, but you can't do any publishing on it at all. Which... (Insert Swear Here).

and THIS is why I save the stories I like chapter-by-chapter on my HD. Because it's like that cheating boyfriend that, for some dumb-butt reason you keep letting back into your life, knowing exactly what they're going to do the moment you turn away. I swear, if I didn't like so many authors who stick to FFN.net or the stories I find there that intrigue me, I'd be a regular at the other major FFN sites. I mean, who enjoys being part of a site that limits creativity, deletes your hard work on their own whims with nary a warning, and allows rampant bullying through reviews and PMs or even in stories themselves!!

I found a 'story' link on FFN.net that was basically this person degrading another author on the site and telling them how bad they are and stupid and all these other cruel things! FFN.net will delete your story if it's in script format like a movie script, but they haven't deleted this damn thing yet?! Xing, or whoever you're @#^$! for to let them have their way with the site and servers, you need to get your act together!

The reason this site says it's up when it's not is because they're just checking the login page, which is still working, trying to access fanfiction's main page through the link on the login page comes up with a 503 error.

If your having issues with firefox, then open a new tab and type in the address bar, about:config and click "I'll be careful, I promise!" and search for network.dns.disableIPV6 and double click it and it should change to true, it fixed it for me.

Well, this f******g s***s. I was check to see what stories I have under favorites have been updated, then i get the message "This Website is Not Available." What kind of bulls**t is that. This isn't even the first time it has happened to me, or the first site it has happened to. If the creators and admins of FanFiction.net cannot keep their site running 24/7, then I say they need to hire some people who have years of experience in the field of website design, networking, and software maintenance to help them with this very obvious malfunction that they overlooked when creating the site.

Now, unfortunately, it has been about an hour since this happened to me, and I am very pissed. The admins are also not even giving us a timeframe for when the site should be back up & running like have in the past, which does not sit well with me. Especially since I am very serious when it comes to timeframes.

Now, I'll admit I have a problem when it comes to fanfiction of different shows and/or movies, but this is one problem I don't intend to fix anytime soon.

So, I say this to any & all FanFiction.net admins and creators reading these comments, take my advice and hire people that actually know what they are doing in terms of networking and software. I don't mean to criticize you about your work on the site, but this is just ridiculous that it happens at least once a month almost.

Sincerely,

Brandon Butler (aka Bringer_of_Despair)

Hi! :D Everyone have a good night or day which ever side of the earth you are on. Fanfiction.net is obviously having a break down. And I am pretty sure the staff wouldn't let us it's loyal fans down over this.

Olivia Bowers · 8 July 2014 - 16:59
United States · Time Warner Cable · Safari 5.0 on Mac

@Helen, I wouldn't call it rage, if you look through most of the comments, many are just expressing their agony and others are being funny, we are trying to cheer each other basically- letting others know they aren't alone. There is actually an addiction called online escapism which I can imagine most of us are experiencing right now, including me unfortunately. Real life just sucks too much.

I *think* it is a weather related incident. Did some searching and the FFN servers are located in Virginia. @Carole, no one's having a /real/ go at the staff, sweetie. We understand they're probably working very hard to get the site up and running again. As I said early, the extra fail-safe they added probably caused some problems. Also as I said earlier, it's very clear that most people are joking, and the staff's probably having a laugh right now and cheering that it's so popular people are complaining that it's down.

Helen Carole Miller · 8 July 2014 - 16:50
United Kingdom · Virgin Media · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

My comment is called honesty, from my perspective, I would rather be honest then have a go at the staff who work all day every day just so we can post our stories. All I said is that people are getting a bit silly, yes no one likes the sight being down, but saying let's rage is just childish.

Rebecca King · 8 July 2014 - 16:48
United States · Utah Education Network · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

@Carole, you know, you should be the one to grow up. Most people are joking, and it's pretty clear they are. Other's are just a bit upset that they were in the middle of updating/reading when it went down. If you don't like it, DON'T READ THESE COMMENTS || @Everyone Else, at least we can all get to updating our own stuff now, right? ^.^

Olivia Bowers · 8 July 2014 - 16:48

People need to grow up, just because fanfiction is down, does not mean that the world is going to end. The staff are likely working their asses off to get the site back up, and if you worked there, and saw these comments, you would not be very happy. So calm down.

I look out my window to see that I am not alone in this crisis. Others are venturing from their homes. Bleary eyed and squinting at the sun. Keep hope, we will remain strong. Though I fear cannibalism may start soon.

@ Carol you are in the wrong place to say those things, we are all here because Fanfics are quite important and we're suffering, if you are not suffering, leave us to suffer and complain, it is what we do best when we cannot read.

I was right in the middle of a story, then this happens! I thought my dad's internet was being stupid again ;-; the comments are amusing though. And not to mention I foolishly exited out of the tab because I thought it was that. Well grr. Whelp, time to eat and renew the comment section in my spare time before I am hit with withdrawal. Guess I can work on the next chapter or watch the the rest of FMAB.

Earth sits at a stand still as the population wonders hopelessly; all of which asking the same question... "Where's the FanFiction..?" (Lol but for real though, I was reading a pretty awesome Black Butler story. Now I wander aimlessly. )

I swear same problem every time. No one can get onto to Fanfiction. But YET we can get onto our profiles.... Just so you all know Fanfiction is not going to be shut down or anything there's no news on it... Just a freaking profile they have every two months...

This might be my last chance to read fanfic for a while. I'm busy this week then ConnectiCon all weekend! Watch this be a huge topic all day. *Walks up to random stranger* "How long were you out for? I was out more than 2 hours(so far)"

I am able too access my profile but nothing else. I had to link to my profile using a google search, it was the only way I could get in. I tried to link to a few stories using the same technique, but no luck. I guess I will have to read an actual book.

I recommend:

http://www.tthfanfic.org/

Well it doesn't have as wide a selection of stories but it has just as many stories, you might want to try it. When one is down the other is always up.

Not to mention many writers are on both of them,

Update from New Hampshire: went to Starbucks in the town over and it works there. Guess I'm on the exact edge of this catastrophe. There are no updates on the website blog or anything saying why it's down. It's not even running slow. So, I'm just going to sip my mocha and be grateful that living in NH finally pays off. Good luck guys!

The Five Stages of Fanfiction Grief:
1) Denial: Oh, it must be my Internet access, refreshing the page ought to fix it.
2) Anger: COME ON I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A GREAT STORY! WORK, DAMN YOU!
3) Bargaining: Please work? It was my last story for the day...okay, I was only going to read a few more. I'll be productive right after that, I promise.
4) Depression: *sobs* *thinks of all the canon-dead characters who were alive in that fanfic* *sobs harder*
5) Acceptance: HA JUST KIDDING *continues sobbing and refreshing the page*
