Can't Access FanFiction - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as m.fanfiction.net

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

and THIS is why I save the stories I like chapter-by-chapter on my HD. Because it's like that cheating boyfriend that, for some dumb-butt reason you keep letting back into your life, knowing exactly what they're going to do the moment you turn away. I swear, if I didn't like so many authors who stick to FFN.net or the stories I find there that intrigue me, I'd be a regular at the other major FFN sites. I mean, who enjoys being part of a site that limits creativity, deletes your hard work on their own whims with nary a warning, and allows rampant bullying through reviews and PMs or even in stories themselves!!

I found a 'story' link on FFN.net that was basically this person degrading another author on the site and telling them how bad they are and stupid and all these other cruel things! FFN.net will delete your story if it's in script format like a movie script, but they haven't deleted this damn thing yet?! Xing, or whoever you're @#^$! for to let them have their way with the site and servers, you need to get your act together!

FF.net?
Please, I know you're in there, People are asking where you've been. They say "have courage", and I'm trying to I'm right out here for you, just let me read. We only have each other. It's just you and me. What are we gonna do?
Do you wanna read a fanfic? Yeah?

Well, me too. But I bloody well can't. 4am is meant for reading. What else am I supposed to do? Sleep? Now who's talking crazy!

Yeah this is not cool. My facebook is working but not my fanfiction. Definitely the site and not the computer. Please fix it. I was in the middle of reading something, went to change chapters and boom gone. I would rather be reading than socializing.

The reason this site says it's up when it's not is because they're just checking the login page, which is still working, trying to access fanfiction's main page through the link on the login page comes up with a 503 error.

If your having issues with firefox, then open a new tab and type in the address bar, about:config and click "I'll be careful, I promise!" and search for network.dns.disableIPV6 and double click it and it should change to true, it fixed it for me.

Believe me I know how hard it is as Im working with server(not this kind of server but it's the same thing). Well, this f******g s***s. I was check to see what stories I have under favorites have been updated, then i get the message "This Website is Not Available." What kind of bulls**t is that. This isn't even the first time it has happened to me, or the first site it has happened to. If the creators and admins of FanFiction.net cannot keep their site running 24/7, then I say they need to hire some people who have years of experience in the field of website design, networking, and software maintenance to help them with this very obvious malfunction that they overlooked when creating the site.

Now, unfortunately, it has been about an hour since this happened to me, and I am very pissed. The admins are also not even giving us a timeframe for when the site should be back up & running like have in the past, which does not sit well with me. Especially since I am very serious when it comes to timeframes.

Now, I'll admit I have a problem when it comes to fanfiction of different shows and/or movies, but this is one problem I don't intend to fix anytime soon.

So, I say this to any & all FanFiction.net admins and creators reading these comments, take my advice and hire people that actually know what they are doing in terms of networking and software. I don't mean to criticize you about your work on the site, but this is just ridiculous that it happens at least once a month almost.

Sincerely,

Brandon Butler (aka Bringer_of_Despair)

Hi! :D Everyone have a good night or day which ever side of the earth you are on. Fanfiction.net is obviously having a break down. And I am pretty sure the staff wouldn't let us it's loyal fans down over this.

Olivia Bowers · 8 July 2014 - 16:59
United States · Time Warner Cable · Safari 5.0 on Mac

@Helen, I wouldn't call it rage, if you look through most of the comments, many are just expressing their agony and others are being funny, we are trying to cheer each other basically- letting others know they aren't alone. There is actually an addiction called online escapism which I can imagine most of us are experiencing right now, including me unfortunately. Real life just sucks too much.

Shimiao Wang · 8 July 2014 - 16:58
United States · Time Warner Cable · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

At least this allows me to take a moment to peruse the abysmal state of my mentality in the light of withdrawal...
And the comments here bear enough of a vestige of facetiousness so as to be entertaining, if not downright endearing.

Tammi Starten · 8 July 2014 - 16:55

I *think* it is a weather related incident. Did some searching and the FFN servers are located in Virginia. They have been having severe weather today all over that region. hopefully one that passes FFN will be back up and running in short order. So hang in there people! There is Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, and Adultfanfiction.net that are all availble.

Rebecca King · 8 July 2014 - 16:53
United States · Utah Education Network · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

@Carole, no one's having a /real/ go at the staff, sweetie. We understand they're probably working very hard to get the site up and running again. As I said early, the extra fail-safe they added probably caused some problems. Also as I said earlier, it's very clear that most people are joking, and the staff's probably having a laugh right now and cheering that it's so popular people are complaining that it's down.

Helen Carole Miller · 8 July 2014 - 16:50
United Kingdom · Virgin Media · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

My comment is called honesty, from my perspective, I would rather be honest then have a go at the staff who work all day every day just so we can post our stories. All I said is that people are getting a bit silly, yes no one likes the sight being down, but saying let's rage is just childish.

Rebecca King · 8 July 2014 - 16:48
United States · Utah Education Network · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

@Carole, you know, you should be the one to grow up. Most people are joking, and it's pretty clear they are. Other's are just a bit upset that they were in the middle of updating/reading when it went down. If you don't like it, DON'T READ THESE COMMENTS || @Everyone Else, at least we can all get to updating our own stuff now, right? ^.^

Olivia Bowers · 8 July 2014 - 16:48
United Kingdom · Redstation Limited · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

@Helen you've said that twice. We get it, you don't care. I am sure the staff would be ecstatic that this is the reaction they get. Hundreds of people moaning about how they miss it and what not. It means it is popular.

United States · Mediacom Cable · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

@ carol actually, I think the staff would be laughing their asses off at most of the comments on here... I know I am. and if fanfiction being down doesn't matter, why are you checking the status of it?

Ashlynn B. Cox · 8 July 2014 - 16:46

Is it weird that it always freaks me out when I find out that there are other people especially guys who are reading FF.net? I just get this crazy urge over methat I should scream something like "WTF!! NO! IT'S MINE!!!! MY PRECIOUS!! MINE!" Huh. So weird.

Helen Carole Miller · 8 July 2014 - 16:45
United Kingdom · Virgin Media · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

People need to grow up, just because fanfiction is down, does not mean that the world is going to end. The staff are likely working their asses off to get the site back up, and if you worked there, and saw these comments, you would not be very happy. So calm down.

how to take over the world in three easy steps(warning step two is not easy): step 1: cause mass panic by disrupting the natural flow of fanfiction step 2: hide, and hope those who read and write said fanfiction don't find you, step 3: fix the fanfiction flow and claim yourself as king of what ever is left of the world.

38 Minutes without my fanfiction. It now seems like there will be no success. I have refreshed the page so many times I have finally lost count. I had no choice but to the room for substance. However, when returning with my comfort food there was still no change. Will insanity ensue. Only time will tell.

Oh NO!!! Not again! I finally get off work, thinking I can relax and read my fanfiction and....I am denied, once again... I may die from the withdrawal! xD

I hope that it won't last too long! :(

I'm vividly remembering a quote about insanity each time i press refresh it goes something like "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - Albert Einstein

.... F*ck

ah, another outage, its a good thing that im patient else i might be here, sitting in a dark room, sharpening various blades, getting geared up for a hunt, most yes. i am most certainly not getting ready to hunt down the ones who dare disrupt the fanfiction and i am positively sure i am now lacing all my blades with a variety of chemicals and toxins. and i most certainly fed my pets today so i most likely wouldn't need to keep someone alive for them to hunt... yes... its a good thing that im patient.

With ANY other website, I would just give an irritated grunt and move on. When ff.net goes down? Yeah, I spend the next however many minutes refreshing over and over, convinced that this will somehow help the site come back up faster. Sad.

Katherine Clow · 8 July 2014 - 14:43

30 minutes without my fanfiction. My mind is slowly starting to sink into further insanity. I continue to pace aimlessly while repeatedly clicking the refresh button. Results are refusing to cease being identical. Soon I will be forced to look at other forms of entertainment. Possibly even venture out into the vast area called my living room.

Amanda Perry · 8 July 2014 - 14:41

Everyone who is upset about ff.net being down should alternatively check out A03 www.archiveofourown.org . It has a large archive of excellent fanfic, and many authors cross-post their works over there.

please bring it back. Can't go outside, will cause bad health issues and I have no more books to read! Please guys, do your best to fix this! I was just in the middle of a story that was cheering me up!

For all Indonesian user out there, Telkom Speedy and Telkomsel blocked fanfiction.net. You can't even access it with google DNS because telkom will force our connection to their DNS, even if you have change your DNS on connection setting.

Well, you still can access Fanfiction.net via proxy like hidemyass or something. It's so sad our government block Facfiction with the reason of pornographic content in FanFiction (lol?).

if you cant open fanfiction when it is not down try change you DNS computer to google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 . maybe your country block the website like indonesian. to change it just open the control panel>netowrk and sharing center>adapter setting>select the internet you are connected>right click>properties>tcp 4 > change the dns

Last time I was gone for a few weeks, come back, and BOOM brand new server crash. Then I sit here for awhile refreshing, then go and make a sandwich and get some chocolate milk, and the site is back up.

Never fails this crap always happens when I'm reading a story. Please do something about the server on this site crashing so much. I have a hunch its because the server gets overloaded and crashes. Again i say do something about it this shouldnt be happening this often.

It's still not fixed. I've just emailed them again. We'll see if they understand. I'm using a different computer and everything.

Edit (+2hours) : It may be working now. I'm going to try uploading something else and report back.

Okay, what you've got to do now, if you get the error message, is to refresh. It'll go through, at least on Chrome. It's worked for me on two uploads now. Everything smooth from there

I can't edit any documents if last week I completely cleaned out my document manager so it was clean...which means I still can't upload any documents. Come on Fanfiction...you have a lot of people waiting.

Erica Osterhoudt · 19 April 2014 - 07:15

Well...this is wonderful. I had an Easter like story to post on Fan Fiction... BUT HOW AM I TO POST IT WHEN THERE IS AN ERROR? I don't HAVE any other Documents to edit or anything!

People will be wondering why I am posting an Easter like story when Easter is finished. >.< Seriously. This is the ONLY place I get recrimination for my stories. Because DeviantART sure as heck doesn't care about what I write..

Thanks Nikki this comment really works

Use my workaround people, it works. I was able to upload new chapters.

Edit a document you already have in there and select/all delete all the text and then paste your current chapter into it (save). And then go post the chapter (put the correct chapter in the Chapter Title field and select the altered document in the 2nd box), it will update to your story and the email has the correct title). Walla...

Thank you!

This is actually ridiculous how long the doc manager hasn't been working. I haven't been on for a couple months and the one day I decide to come back on and start writing, I can't upload my documents..

I've been trying to post for the past 2 hours and each time, I get the Type 2 error message when I attempt to use the Doc Manager. I've already emailed the site, but so far they haven't even replied. Thank goodness I'm not the only one having this issue...

Jillian Avalon · 18 April 2014 - 16:16

Yeah, I'm getting the Error Type 2 message as well, so it's still down. That's while trying to upload a new chapter. So far nothing else I wanted to do was having issues. I hope they deal with this quickly. I've not updated in several days now...

I can't post the ending to my story, is anyone else having this issue? I can get the document on there but it wont allow me to update.

I can get *on* but my PM system with the person I usually correspond with... messages won't show up and a stray message from someone else *to* someone else also showed up on those pages as well. Our PM replies go to email, but won't show up on the website.

I would totally not usually do this but you guys have been such an incredible support system over the years. I absolutely love this show Star Crossed and am terrified it is going to get canceled! I would so appreciate if y'all would watch it. It is on tonight on the CW at 8/7c. There is an incredible fanfic out right now as well called Break Forth to New Mutiny. Read it/Watch it/Support it. Love you guys! THANKS SO MUCH!

here's the response I received from firefox ...

"hello, i can certainly replicate this issue. my guess is that the site is currently implementing measures against the recently published widespread vulnerability that allows webservers with a certain version of openssl running on them to be exploited (heartbleed.com) & is switching their certificate.

an advanced security feature in firefox is picking up this change as the site doesn't seem to be fully updated for this new certificate yet. you can temporarily work around the issue:

enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named security.ssl.enable_ocsp_stapling. double-click it and change its value to false. it is important however, that after a bit of time when the issue gets resolved by the site (maybe try again in 24 hours), you go back and switch the setting to "true" again!"
