Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

Like Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), the IMAP4 protocol uses port 25 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to send messages, but an IMAP4 server uses port 143 to listen for messages.

Unlike POP3, IMAP4 allows you to store your messages by default on the server, instead of downloading them locally.

Use one of the following methods to configure Outlook as an IMAP4 client.
Method 1: Microsoft Office Outlook 2010

Start Outlook.
On the File menu, click Info and click Account Settings.

Vacationing in Australia and using my MacBook Air (Safari) . Checking my emails here at my temporary digs and using their "premier WiFi started out a bit slow - but only on Cox - on Day 1, slower on Day 2, etc .... On Day 4 the cox webmail sign in boxes sometimes did not come up at all: at other times, even when I re-entered my user names and password from scratch I got "Sorry - Too many invalid attempts .... blah blah". I wasted 50 some minutes on the phone with Cox tech support yesterday as the helper seemed to keep taking wild guesses to understand and fix the problem ... but she and I finally had to give up. Today I called hoping for a more knowledgeable helper, who also tried for almost an hour unsucessfully using slightly different approaches than the first helper ... but again to no avail. I gave up and posted something on my FB page advising any of my contacts there to just send me private FB messages instead for now until I can get back Stateside and go from there. Frustrating and then some! In a weird sort of way it's comforting to learn that I'm not the only (blindly) loyal Cox customer who's been having horrible Cox webmail issues. I thought it was something I had inadvertently caused or that my Mac had somehow turned on me.

Same issue, coming and going, for more than a year. Says it cannot get email, for me to check settings. Then two minutes later it's fine. In and out. Recent months have been far better, less frequent, but today it's been down for more than fifteen minutes. Oddly enough, only one of my two accounts, the wife's is fine, but this has attacked each service over time. None of my other accounts do this (Hotmail, Gmail). Why can Cox not get this right over so much time?

All my emails dissapeared 2 days ago. I am receiving some sporadically but then they disappear as soon as I read them. I did not change any settings, It just happended and I have tried everything to no avail. Cox's webmail 'service' is the worst on the planet — it's almost impossible to access reliably, even in Cox's home territory, and it's even worse from outside the USA; it has a horrible, primitive and outdated interface; its security certificates are usually out-of-date, which for some reason disables any fancy formatting when you compose emails in basic mode; when you use the advanced mode, the backspace key does not delete; page refresh whenever you carry out an operation can be glacially slow; sometimes you can load only the basic Cox webmail service, and sometimes only the advanced one; Cox fails to post information about temporary webmail problems on its website; complaints to Cox about the shortcomings of the company's webmail 'service' fall on deaf ears; etc. etc. In short, it sucks big-time.

The good news is that you're not stuck with this super-complacent and customer-hostile company's appallingly lousy webmail product if you choose not to be. (Google) Gmail's webmail function has an importing tool that you can set up to import all your Cox emails (including your sent emails, drafts and any additional mailboxes you might have set up in Cox's email system) into Gmail. It will also auto-retrieve emails received to your Cox address for one month following successful importation, giving you that time to notify your contacts and modify any email subscriptions you have set up.

Note that it can take several days for all your Cox emails to be retrieved, and the import function does not necessarily retrieve the most recent emails first. (NB: When I first tried the import function, I got an error message from Google for a few days. But eventually it succeeded.) Incidentally, the import function leaves all your Cox emails intact on the Cox server, so you are not risking anything by performing the import.

You can also set up mail forwarding in Cox's webmail service to relay incoming emails addressed to your Cox address onwards to your new Gmail address indefinitely — or at least for as long as you are still a Cox subscriber.

Goodbye useless, unreliable, primitive Cox!

My iPhone, iPad, and Mac suddenly stopped downloading my Cox mail on 12-1-15. When I logged in to Webmail last night, I got a warning message that they were having technical difficulties. Classic Webmail was working fine, but their newer version was a disaster. I would delete messages, then almost all of them would reappear. The whole screen would go blank for 20-30 seconds at a time while it updated the inbox, and this happened every 2-3 minutes.
The fact that they are having ongoing problems but not posting it on their websites or sending email to customers is speaking volumes about how much Cox cares about customer service.

It is super sloooooooow. I also found out, when I am in Jamaica, I cannot access my COX email AT ALL. There is no way it will work because I called from JAMAICA and nobody could help me. cox servers are not working properly, constantly bugged, not recognizing an established accound, and cox webmail is terrible with bugs, for example, if you use your webmail several times in a row, it will reset the dates of all your emails, meaning that, once finally your Outlook account resume working with Cox, you will receive hundreds of old emails with the wrong date.

We're having regular disconnects - the DNS servers assigned are chronically slow, and tonight the gateway simply stopped responding. A DHCP renew wasn't even enough - I had to release the IP completely, and then renew. After that it FINALLY picked up a completely new gateway - a very different IP address than the previous one, though the DNS remained the same, sadly.

Anyone know what the heck Cox is doing lately that is causing this constant disruption in the San Diego area? Or why we're being dynamically assigned DNS and often even gateway addresses as far as 5 states away?

The Ping times are pitiful... anything over 60ms is abysmal... and the ones shown, plus my own, are WAY over 200ms. Even if I substitute something like OpenDNS settings, it does no good when the GATEWAY is showing 243ms pings!

I called them yesterday. I was told that for security reasons, some (not all) accounts were locked and users were required to reset your password. In my case, it had to be reset by a technician as I could not reset it over their website. I can now access my email on my computer or web mail, but it still will not pull up on my phone. There is definitely something going on, but they were very sketchy as to why. I also find it very unprofessional that they did not send out some sort of notice to those of us affected.

Many emails not getting through---today practically none, and I always get lots! over last weeks many people have sent emails that never reached my inbox or my spam folder! These are people who have my correct email and they are in my approved addresses!
