Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

The BBC is currently suffering an intermittent internet services outage that has taken down its website, the BBC iPlayer and all other digital services provided by the domain.

Users started complaining about the iPlayer and website issues at in the early hours of Thursday morning, with web service down detector indicating major issues from around 7am. The website is currently showing 500 error pages, with some parts of it intermittently loading and others completely offline.

The BBC’s radio and television broadcasts are unaffected but many of the broadcaster’s digital services are offline.

From memory the last time it was down was probably three or four years ago. Wish people would be a bit more patient before starting to slag off everything from the website structure to BBC exec salaries (which are low compared to most commercial broadcasters). We don't know the reason why the site is down - might be a DDoS - in which case hardly their fault.

I don't know why its claiming that the BBC website is up but just not available on my computer. Its quite obvious that the BBC homepage is down. All i get is a skeleton view of the homepage and its been like that for 3 days. So its not Google Chrome or Safari or IE8 etc etc, its the actual BBC website. I don't know why they just don't admit it and tell everyone they have a problem - isn't it funny how all the big companies blame everything else they can instead of just being honest :-(

Top 10 Reasons Why Comcast to BBC Sites are down:
10. Comcast engineers are trying to fix problem by turning their PCs and routers on and off repeatedly.
9. BBC Who/What?
8. We don’t allow communications with socialist governments.
7. BBC is not a proper news source because they tell the public the truth
6. We don’t know, we can’t get to the BBC sites.
5. The Syrian Electronic Army blocked access to
4. We don’t like the BBC Iplayer
3. We gained independence in 1776 and don’t want American minds clouded with British colonial ideas.
2. If the BBC is not good enough for the Iranians then it’s not good enough for our customers!
And the #1 reason,
1. It’s a public service, we are blocking adult content from the American public!!
