Can't Access Ancestry UK - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

I have a leaf at the top of the page which says 73 hints but I can't click on it. The 'view people with hints' link from halfway down the home page says I have 20 people with 69 hints, but still none are showing on the right hand side. I can only open hints from within each person's record, but I don't have time to open every single person over 7 generations and two continents trying to see if they have hints. I've emailed several times with absolutely no attempt at a response from them. Is anyone else having the same problem? It's the same whether I use Chrome or IE11.

There appears to be a problem with the LIFESTORY algorithm which is irritatingly corrupting locations (Birth, Marriage, Death) with unintended foreign places.

It occurs to me that any future correction of the algorithm will regenerate and overwrite the contents of the LIFESTORY entries - including destroying any work already undertaken by users who may have submitted EDITS to enhance the Lifestories.

I have over 900 duplicate people on my tree. Every time I try to merge a person with his/her duplicate, you crash and have to shut down. Re-booting involves a lengthy synchronization. My free six months end this Thursday. If I cannot get my tree working, there will be little point on paying the subscription due.

I have not been able to log in to for days now. This website says the site is up and running, but it isn't on this computer. A phone call to ancestry yesterday suggested the site was down and would remain so - ring in a week. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. We need answers or a refund on lost time.

I get the feeling that the technicians at Ancestry are 2nd rate at best. For more than 6 months now I have been reporting an issue with hints whereby the number of shaky leaves indicated at the top of the page (about 20 at present) bears no relationship to what is shown in the summary (over 200 right now) at a time when I only have 2 hints in reality. Each time I have called, (about once a month) they manually correct one, and say they are working on it

Around 1:30 p.m. MT on Monday, June 16, 2014, attackers targeted Ancestry with a Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS). During the attack, Ancestry websites along with the Find A Grave website were clogged with massive amounts of bogus traffic that took the sites down. The number of people on the FB pages of both sites who have said they're going to cancel because of this is unreal. I'm with broadband in Ireland and also having problems with Menus are dropping down but nothing happens when clicked on. The help and contact also not operating. My membership is up in 3 weeks time and I had hoped to get some final work done on my tree before I run out of time. Very frustrating considering the cost of it.

Still not able to do anything on Ancestry. Like Pam Shortis, menus are dropping down but nothing happens when clicked on. I'm trying to access from the US so it can't be a BT issue, frustrating!

Can get into the site and menu bars are dropping as they should, but nothing is accessible. Running Windows 7 with Chrome.

Been down all evening - so annoying as set time aside purely for this today.

Trying for hours from New Jersey USA.. can't connect, so nothing to do with a BT Hub.. it's an Ancestry problem.
