We have tried pinging RootsWeb website using our server and the website returned the above results. If rootsweb.com is down for us too there is nothing you can do except waiting. Probably the server is overloaded, down or unreachable because of a network problem, outage or a website maintenance is in progress...

Can't Access RootsWeb - Troubleshooting Instructions

If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

Browser Related Problems

Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Try alternative urls such as rootsweb.ancestry.com

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

Fix DNS Problems

A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.

Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :

If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.

Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

Access to the family trees on Rootsweb is just about what I live for! Please, please get this up and running again! These trees, correct or not, have given me a lot of clues to follow. I NEED Rootsweb. It was down not long ago, then it was back up the other day. I just had my computer upgraded to Windows 10, and now I cannot make Rootsweb come up at all. To say I am frustrated is an understatement!

Ancestry is being cheap...They don´t show green shakey leaves when I load up my gedcom. They would always give 5-6 hints or more for each person...Now I don´t get 1 hint! -_-

Freepages File Manager is finally back -- it returned last night. So now I can edit my website again. But like I mentioned before, the website has reverted to a version from eight months ago. Now to the task of restoring everything to the way it was in late February . . . .

My website has reappeared this evening -- but it's a version of it from last July, lacking all of the additions and corrections I've made since then. As discussed in the previous comments, RootsWeb is currently under maintenance due to a serious hardware failure. Most of RootsWeb is still inaccessible while the repairs are under way. The most recent update says that everything should be restored by March 15 or thereabouts.

RootsWeb Website Update
imageAncestry.com has issued more information regarding the RootsWeb website outage. As many of you had assumed, it was a hardware failure. The message of the RootsWeb home page now reads:

We're currently experiencing a temporary website outage due to Rootsweb [sic] hardware failure. Rest assured, our development and web operations teams are busy working to securely restore the site as quickly as possible. Our initial expectation is to have the site back up and running on or around March 15, 2016.
We apologize for the disruption and thank-you for your patience.
We will provide other updates here as we have them.

It’s never a good sign when a website owner can’t capitalize the name of its own website.

To be fair, the current message was probably placed there by hardware guys scrambling to save the site, not to spell it correctly. Still, how can I pass up an opportunity that good to tease Ancestry. :-)

You may be wondering why Ancestry is thinking it will take two weeks to get the site back up and running. In this sort of situation, it’s dangerous to give any sort of date, as things always take longer than expected, especially under emergency situations. I imagine they have padded the date, thinking it will take less time, and that actually it will take more.

For your flagship product, you are constantly moving, improving, rewriting, and upgrading. The Ancestry.com website will have state of the art tape backup hardware and software. It would be too costly not to. RootsWeb will have been operating in MacGyver mode for some time. There was little money in operating it otherwise. It wouldn’t surprise me if the tape backup system used on RootsWeb will be so old and so slow that using it was a bit like painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Perhaps it was taking a week or more to run a complete backup of the RootsWeb website and it will take a week to completely reload all the tapes. Up to one week of data will not have been backed up, and you may find you’ve lost days of work.

It may be not at all as dire as I’ve outlined. Keep your fingers crossed.

Christina Spencer Olar · 2 March 2016 - 15:22

As was mentioned in an earlier comment, Rootsweb is not expected to be restored until on or about March 15. Ancestry announced the other day that there was a hardware failure that understandably will take a while to fix -- first to get the new hardware, then to configure everything and transfer the vast amounts of data to the new hardware.

The last time Rootsweb was down for this long, it was in 2014 when all of Ancestry's sites, not just Rootsweb, were knocked out by a group of hackers' sustained denial of service attack. This time it's a hardware problem affecting only the Rootsweb sites.

I have a nervous feeling about what is happening with Ancestry and the downtime on World Connect. Having used Family Tree Maker and Ancestry from the early 90's, I have watched Ancestry slowly buy out all of their competitors programs. I purchased a lot of their CD's on records all over the world and the technology has changed so much, they are useless now. Some are available in the Ancestry searches, some you have to have another subscription to access the same info I purchased on CD. They have envouraged everyone to submit their trees to Ancestry.com and World Connect and to connect to their programs, like Family Tree Maker so they Sync back and forth. I have updated each time an updated version of FTM, including 2014. 3 Days after I purchased the update, they came out saying they were doing away with FTM and will no longer update it, and it will be honored until the end of 2016. Now What? It seems to me genealogists all over the world have done their research, and then put it online to share with others freely, either on Ancestry.com or World Connect. I really have a gut feeling like as soon as they can get all their ducks in a row, they are going to make both services a subscription service. Basically, charging everyone to see and use the research that has been done by contributors. I hope I'm wrong, but with the options becoming fewer and fewer, except for Ancestry owned enterprises, we will be forced to pay their fees. Please prove me wrong, Ancestry.

I, for one, happen to think that Rootsweb.com will be back. I have a very large website posted on Rootsweb with approximately 20, 000 headstone photos and about 11, 000 obits that I have worked on for about 10 years. I don't think that the shutdown happens to be some sort of inside job as some are yelling. You know what, even if it does shut down and even if I lose my info I'm certainly not going to stress out about it. There are other things in life that are certainly more important than Rootsweb. Yes, the website has been down for quite a while. Nay sayers and pessimists, you are certainly entitled to your opinions, but maybe try to take a deep breath and chill out just a little and let it play out unless you have the answer to bringing it back online. By the way, you can see the latest status for Rootsweb on the Ancestry.com Facebook page. They seem to be trying.

I am not understanding why the fact that RootsWeb is free has anything to do with the length of time it is taking to fix the problem. After all, FindAGrave is also a free service.

Brian L. Lightfoot Sr. · 20 June 2014 - 10:41
United States · AT&T U-verse · Chrome 35.0 on Windows

With the DDOS attacks resolved on the main ancestry.com server as well as the Find A Grave.com server, the World Connect / RootsWeb is the last remaining piece of the puzzle to put back together. But... and a big but here... RootsWeb is a free service offered by Ancestry and as such they devote very little resources to fixing any server problems. RootsWeb is and has been the "low man on the totem pole". I can remember a similar service outage about 2 years ago. I finally got through to a human on the phone at Ancestry but was told because it is a free service, I shouldn't expect results anytime soon. I should expect the same thing to happen with the current outage and anything like a week or two of down time is not out of the question.

Still having trouble connecting to any rootsweb data. I'm a genealogy addict and I'm missing my fix. :)

Rootsweb is not going bankrupt. It is a not-for-profit corporation now controlled and misused and abused for a decade or more by Ancestry..com.

The problems come from Ancestry.com not having enough servers for all its users as it has strangled its large MyFamily sites by eliminating daily Notifications, which breached their contract but shut off many folks from what was happening, hundreds of thousands of folks or more I am told.

So when it was announced last week that all of MyFamily would close and those at the original sites would not be given a site download like the members signed up by Ancestry.com as owner of MyFamily, you have peope needing to gather their non-permanent supposedly permanent family information provided by hundreds of site members at each site.

I suspect what happened is foreseeable by Ancestry.com when it ripped the carpet from the decade old sites with tens of thousands of posts.

People became frantic just as those west of Baghdad are, both facing barbarians, one ISIS and the other LDS guys joined by an evil venture capital firm.

All shall be named and should with the name eivil-Ancestry.com live in infamy.

It has been down since the Ancestry.com attack happened 2 or 3 days ago. Ancestry.com is intermittent right now . I hope it will eventually be fixed. Findagrave is also down

Is there any way of asking the Rootsweb people directly what the problem is?
